The worlds greatest cars
did anyone see the 5th Gear special on Channel 5 the other day ?
Tiff gave thumbs up for the Ferrari F40 and 360 Modena, and it was great to see the Escort Cosworth get a good review Overall winner was the McLaren F1 road car. |

Mmmm, the F1. Lovely car, and just the right number of seats for me, Mrs Bottle (aka Hurricane on 10 10ths) and babybottle!
It's not easy to narrow "best car ever" down to one car, but it sounds like they chose well! |

Isn't it a bit predicable that 'best' always ends up meaning 'fastest'.

The F1 is more than fast, it's also a great looking car and an exellent piece of engineering, something you can't say about a Mondeo! Thats why I think it's difficult if not impossible to narrow it down to one car. The best car ever therefore should have the best looks, performance, quality of construction and practicality (er, that's where the F1 falls down, but it does at least have room for more passengers than the F40!)

the Mclaren F1 has gotta be the most extreme purpose built road car. I mean there are other monsters on the road (Mercedes CLK GT1, Porsche 911 GT1 etc) but they were only made for homologation. Whereas the F1 was built as a £600,000.00 road car, mad?!?.

It's a wonderful car! A friend of mine used to work at Ilmor, and the director of his department had an F1 - he had to park ages away from the Ilmor site and walk, because he couldn't get the car over the speed bumps!!

Perhaps the greatest thing is that it was built as a road car, but still won Le Mans.

Quite fitting, as the Le Mans race used to be a test of endurance for road cars.

Then I'd prefer a far more spectacular car a couple of Le Mans's earlier: Ford GT40!
(Top Gear did test one, didn't they?) |

Mmm, I'll have two!!
The F1 has an advantage over the GT40 as far as 'practicality' goes- you can take two friends with you! Apart from that, yes I'd prefer a (real) GT40!! |

Oh yeah! Ofcourse a Alfa 33 Stradale is cooler than a GT40 what was I thinking? Only thing is, can you think of anything that beats these two impressive cars?

hey... it's 33 not 22 but if you want to see some pics .. check www.quattroruote.it www.supercars.net ... www.ultimatecarpage.com ....
won Daytona and I think LeMans in under 2litre class ... engine V8 2l and 230bhp for Stradale ... Last edited by Dani Filth; 8 Oct 2002 at 15:01. |

Why on Earth do you people call extra passenger seats a good thing. The last thing i want when I'm out for a drive is some idiot sitting beside me screaming and praying and tearing grab handles from the mountings.

Aaah yes the JB, what a mighty beast it was. Id have one of them over a McLaren F1 anyday. I want it with the optional extra of "Extra smokey exhaust" or was that a standard feature on all of them ?

Patto and Bondy are on the right Track!!

The best car for J-Fred-average is the one that gives most driving pleasure because lets face it, the nut behind the wheel is the dude having the fun and it is the driving that should be giving you the pleasure. Fine machinery is a wonder to behold but lets not lose sight of the fact that driving is a buzz under the right circumstances. I can remember times when I was screaming in my helmet at the sheer joy of the road, the scenery and the circumstances whilst motorcycling (no I was not scared doggy-doo less!!). Another example, driving along on the dead boring (wait for it 110 Km/hr) freeway from Sydney to Canberra ferrying the family back from visiting relatives. I came across a big cat coupe tooling along, I whipped out to past in the mighty 3300cc Holden/Opel Commodore in a section of whoopty doos (undulations for the uninformed) and glanced over at the driver. I swear it was Damon Hill!!! The Grand Prix had just been run, so why couldn’t it have been Damon? (Tell me I’m wrong if you’re out there Damon! Go on burst my bubble!!). I had a smile from ear to ear to think that I might be sharing a lonely piece of concrete with an F1 hero. I have probably babbled on a little, but, hope I have caused just a little re-think amongst some of the younger folk out there. Its a little premature, but, Safe, enjoyable Driving over the holiday period to all Ten-tenthers. |
