DNQ should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Can Someone Please Explain this?

"1995: CART and IMS become embroiled in a lawsuit over use of the terms "IndyCar" and "Indy car," which CART had licensed the use of from IMS for many years. The result of the lawsuit was that neither CART, the IRL, IMS, Tony George, or any entity connected with them would be allowed to use those terms until December 31, 2002."

I read that on this page - would someone be kind enough to explain what this is all about and if it's still in effect...also what happens on Jan 1, 2003?

Well, when he formed the IRL and threw CART out of Indianapolis, Tony George wanted to remove any links between CART and his track. Therefore, bitter and selfish arse he is, he sued to force CART to give up anything they had with the word Indy in it.

Tony'll probably have a lawyer ready to register the Indycar trademark in his name on New Year's morning.

At first I was upset about this but not any more. The cars that run at Indy are now inferior to the Champ cars and in my opinion the IRL has dragged the meaning of Indycar down. The name is useless to CART these days.

So what about Honda Indy, and Molson Indy? Or is that the promotors, not CART itself?

My understanding is that Molson pays to used the word "Indy". I believe they pay IMS for this use. I am not sure want will happen to the "Molson Indy" next year. I will see what I can find out from Molson Indy people.

Thank you for explaining this people.
I can't stand the man Tony George, I am not amazed it was he who was behind this. The man is a fool.

I haven't referred to the CART series as Indycars in ages. Although my dad still calls it the PPG's.

Me either, I call it Champ Cars. IndyCar is so sixties. Besides it reminds me of go-karts.

Why can't CART race at IRP - Indianapolis Raceway Park?

I call it CART. I don't really like the Champ Cars name.

Journalists here call CART "Formula CART" and IRL "Formula Indy"

I still find myself calling it "CART PPG" rather consistently.

"The CART Fedex Champcar Series presented by Firestone" just sounds way too clumsy and corporate.

It's called "Formula Mundial" in Latin America. I bit clumsy on the tongue, but dignified.

IRP really isn't built for a series as big as CART. Plus Tony George has the political muscle to make hell for the track if he wanted to. And the NHRA, the owners of IRP, don't want George as an enemy.

IRP really isn't built for a series as big as CART. Plus Tony George has the political muscle to make hell for the track if he wanted to. And the NHRA, the owners of IRP, don't want George as an enemy.
The name (or nickname) Formula Mundial was created by Brazilian broadcaster TV Record when it acquired the rights to show the category in that market, in 1995, and following the split CART/IRL.

As karts are quite well known in Brazil, calling it CART would be very misleading. For a while the Formula CART name was used, but it was also dismissed, for the same reason.

Prior to that it was locally called "Formula Indy" (broadcasting in Brazil began in 1985 by TV Bandeirantes, another network, following the exploits of Emerson Fittipaldi).

The far large majority of fans still call it Formula Indy, but the Formula Mundial brand was adopted by other media channels (the influential O Estado de São Paulo was one of the first), and then it migrated to other countries. Indeed, some newspapers in other Latin American countries are also calling it Formula Mundial.

During the CART Fan Forum in Elkhart Lake this very same question was asked to the speakers. All present - especially Mario Andretti and Derek Daly - agreed that CART suffers from an indentity crisis for what its name is also a culprit. Mario told amusing stories about the need to explain what the category is everytime he says its name. Daly mentioned similar problems with confused students in his driving school in Las Vegas.

All agreed the the word formula should be used, as it evokes racing, exotism, technology, tradition and has an international flavor, but then Derek Daly contradicted himself on this latter when he suggested the use of the name "Formula America".

"Formula Mundial" goes aligned with Chris Pook's vision for a world-wide series (by the way, the Elkhart Lake race was broacasted to 177 countries, live or on tape).

Also, fans everywhere - especially in the United States - associate the word formula with a single-seater, open-wheel racing car. For a series looking for its own niche, this creates a wellcome distintion from NASCAR - as to the "Average Joe" in the US, this category unfortunately became a synonym to motorsport.

And you, Lee, are very correct on your words about the IRP.

Cheers,

Let's think about names then!

Formula Turbo? After all, which other Formula uses turbo engines?

I like CART or Formula CART, but they are confusing...

A name change for CART's on-track product would be great. CART sanctioned Formula America, Formula World, Formula something, please.

I hate the word Indy.

I still subconsciously call it IndyCars, but I have had someone say "that's rubbish, they just race round and round on ovals". It only occurred to me later that he thought I meant the IRL.

Indycars for me are the super speed way roundy roundy ....

The present Champcars are where it is at...

Even with 18 cars in '03. At least it is proper racing.

The rest is semantics. Or Ancronmantics.
