New Renault on Track

It has hit the tracks, although not official launched.

The front wing is a V shaped and appears to continue to rise as we move from the centre all the way to the edge (not just to rise from the central section that can be lower).

The rear dips away after the sidepod too (as is becoming the norm?).

And we have QE2 funnels on the side-pods. I think they are bigger than the McLaren's, but smaller than the Toyota's?

Gills - cooling appears to be a high priority - radiator inlets are on the big side by modern standards and sidepod venting is liberal to say the least. Maybe that is relate to long-life engines... perhaps it is felt that ample cooling is essential if you're going to stress an engine hard over long periods. The key strategy for other teams appears to be go for marginal cooling and hence optimal aerodynamic performance and then have strict guidelines fo rengine usage which mean not running max revs a lot of the time. Ironically, that could mean a Renault that qualifies relatively poorly, but races fast.

Looking at the sideviews... don't you think that the zone behind the driver's seat up to the rear axis is a little longer than the one seen in other 2005 cars?
I believe Bar and Sauber are shorter there.

And the fuel tank seems short and little too...

The front nose instead is very similar to 2004 McLaren, so narrow...

Your opinion?

That rear wing must flex, surely? Can't see that surviving without a protest.

I'd also like to see if the gills on the sidepods close at all at high speed due to air pressure - would be clever but illegal.

A centre support that attaches to the top of the wing plane below (which looks very secure) might give it enough rigidity. After all it is not whether it bends, but how much.

They're putting so much downforce equipment on the cars nowadays they're starting to look like modern batmobiles.

The rear wing is the same as last year's R24 surely?

I'd need some detail pics, but it looks almost identical.

Overall, I find this Renault quite hideous with all its gills and trickery. The nose is alright. If it is fast, I'll stop complaining!

Rather crazily it seems as though all the rear wings will be huge this year, I don't understand why the FIA didn't just say make the rear wings twice as small?

The FIA reduced the size of the wing elements to reduce downforce.

But at the same time they wanted to increase drag - hence the bigger endplates (which have a by product of having more advertising space.

I thought they had just moved the rear wing forward?

Indeed it did. Really the only major changes to it, have been the overall size of the endplates, fitting in with the new regulations.

I remember first spotting that general concept of the rearwing at 2003 Silverstone test session.
