Taylor wins thriller over Carpenter at Chicago
Mark Taylor has won the Chicagoland 100 by just 0.0170 seconds over Ed Carpenter. Jeff Simmons finished 3rd 0.0522 seconds behind Mark.
Carpenter led most of the laps through the race, with Mark trying to find a way past. A late yellow and one lap dash to the flag gave him the opportunity he needed Can't wait until I see the pictures, first three crossed the line three abreast!! Last edited by jmt; 6 Sep 2003 at 21:36. |

They were never more than a few inches apart the whole race. It was 190mph chess out there. Carpenter had the speed, easily blowing by Taylor on the straight, but Mark hung in changing the lead 17 times ususlly by a nose each time. Carpenter really should have won, but Taylor never gave up and looked like his only chance was a timed run down the back straight taking the tow, running outside on turns 3 and 4 and nicking it at the line. In the end a late yellow left them a one lap shootout with the same scenario, but complicated by accelerating from the restart with Carpenter dictating when and how. Quick restarts has been one of Taylors strengths this year and he got it just right as you can see from the pic above.
6 from 10 starts sound like he has had it easy, but anyone seeing the races will tell you how far from true that is. He should wrap up the championship in California all being well, with one race to spare. |
