Motec Help

Hi guys,

I'm 35 years old and just bought myself a little sports car for track days and the odd race meeting here and there. Given motorsport and, more particular, data aquisition, have been a huge interest to me for many years, I'm living my dream in getting to learn more about data and extracting more from the car using the old computer horsepower.

It's got an ADL data logging system, and I've just downloaded and installed i2 and started working with the demo data that comes with the program, but want to learn more about the graphs, charts, etc.

Is there a website I can go to that will give me more info? Or anybody got a tutorial sheet or anything like that which could help me more quicker?

I am aware of the Motec Seminars and will attend the next one in my area, but was looking for any online help/info with getting the most from my data.

Sorry, I don't use i2, just had a little experience with the ECU's, so apart from their own web site (that gives the basic version and the user manuals), I can't help beyond the seminar suggestion. I found the ECU one great, even though I have an Autronic on my car these days

I'm just over the NSW-side of the NSW/Qld border, but my main travels are to Brisbane and Sunshine Coast. I don't mind emailing as my weekdays are pretty busy.

Basically I'm trying to learn maths channels and working out oversteer/understeer and things such as roll and pitch. From what I can find on the net and from the Motec site there isn't a lot of helpful info out there....

Hmm, sounds a bit out of my depth, I've played with Motec for tuning motors and fiddled with the data logging for the motor. Any advice I could offer on chassis data logging would be of a general nature and probably not helpful. Over your way Campbell Little is the man, race engineer for 888 racing over there but still the MoTec man for NSW as far as I know. He'd be the one most likely to know someone to help. Sorry I don't have a contact number, know him by association only.

It a good introduction and applies to any data aquisition system.

The "bible" is Buddy Fey's book called "Data Power", but this has been printed on "Unobtainium"

After all that, try the Motec seminars - not cheap but I suspect they are worth there weight in gold in you are serious.

Apart from that, play with the software and see what you come up with. For example you can compare things like oil pressure and G forces, check out gearing and check out your circle of forces.

You will soon find yourself adding more sensors, i.e. steering angle can be used to determine oversteer and understeer, infrared (non contact) temp sensors can be used to monitor tyre temps - though having 12 won't come cheap!
