Old Helmets
Hey guys, I am doing a group presentation at college on the motorsport safety helmet. The particular area I am investigating is the history of motorsport helmets. THere is very minimal information that I can find, so if anyone has any that they would share, I would be very apprechiative.
Thanks Mitch |

I've explained quite a bit about the development of safety gear. Also the page has links to SNELL where you can discover even more. http://www.mallettracing.co.uk/safety.htm |

Initially Stirling Moss used an ex-army despatch rider's helmet. this was soon replaced by one from Herbert Johnson who made helmets for jockeys and polo players.

Of course pre-war helmets were just worn in place of a hat - no one would have gone out without a hat.

Mitch, For what it's worth my helmet approved by CAMS for Australian open circuit racing in the 60's (and which I still have) is an AGV "Protector" with the label on the top inside lining marked as "B.S.I 1869/60 APPROVED" for "A.M.A. GROUP #1 JULY 1960". Both the BSI and AMA designations have accompanying logos. There are some other labels around the inside of the helmet but these are illegible due to wear.
Cheers and good luck with your research. |
