Leads me to my next point : Is the Bathurst 1000 event in the year 2005, the same special race that has been an iconic part of Australian motorsport through out the ages Personally, when I looked at the 1000 last year I kind of didn't get that buzz, that this is a special day kind of feeling. Maybe because its become a part of the championship. Maybe because the race used to be for everyone, now days with the 35 soon to be reduced to 32 grid, its a closed shop mentality in which the race was built on. Maybe due the race being broken up by the safety car. Maybe I was just a sucker for a channel 7 telecast. With Avesco taking over the promotion and running of the event, I only think this event is going to lose even more of its passion, spiritual connection to the yesterdays. Im not sure. But what are your guys opinions on the race as it currently sits ?? |

The objectives and aims of the 1000km race promoted by IMG (and from this year AVESCO) since 1997, firstly in November then back to October, is completely different to those of the 1000km race run and/or supported by the BCC/ARDC/Channel 7 every year between 1963 - 1998 (ok, technically 1973 for 1000km) on the one Long Weekend every year. I was pleased the spirit of the ARDC Bathurst 1000 was rekindled with the Bathurst 24 Hour, the spirit of competing, the many different cars and classes, drivers both professional and amateur welcome etc.....lets not poisen what was started (and stopped way to early) with the AVESCO way again..... |

More Car Manufacturers?
Hey Mabs......I looked at your list of suggested cars and it left me puzzled............Do you think there might be a reason why it's called 'V8" supercars?

I like the idea of more regular races in a defined season. Gasp, maybe even every week! Works for other sports.
Making the cars more production based would keep the costs down (especially if a car gets written off during a race), and watching more realistic cars would be quite interesting. We'd get more racing, and casual fans would get the hang of it rather than this ad hoc "every third or fourth weekend maybe" system we've got now. |

In my opinion whether you go for a production-derived race car it's expensive (see Super 2000 or N-GT for example) or whether you go for a production-based it's expensive (see Grp N where somehow "production" WRXs and Evos cost $200k each). I think to have tough race bits, and mandate more standardized race bits if needed to control costs, is better in my opinion. |

Hypothetically, though, if they did decide to adopt your modifications, I can just hear somewhere in a backroom, a conversation going " Screw this, I wanna race V8's" and "yeah, me too" and "hey, I want to watch you race V8's". And these people then get together somewhere, and race V8's. Maybe just Holdens and Fords again, or maybe they might let others in, so long as they bring along a V8. And it grows into a full, professional series. I wonder which series will survive? Another option would be to run this series as a competitor to the AVESCO-run series. Once again, I wonder who would survive? Having said that, though, I have no problem with people throwing what may seem like silly suggestions up there for discussion.... how many fantastic ideas sounded like lunacy when first conceived? (According to my wife, most of mine!) I love the idea of a 24hr V8 Supercar race, BTW, especially at Bathurst. (Or Adelaide! ) |

I have a great idea, why don't we have an Australian Championship, that includes all manufacturers, but the proviso is that they must be production cars.
We could have seperate categories for: V8 powered cars 6 cylinder powered cars 4 cylinder powered cars Rotary powered cars Performance cars Production cars If you like the idea, go back 20 years when REAL Production Car racing took place, and blow off this silhouette category (aka V8 Supercars) that is piching ALL the money from real motorsport in Australia. |

Bathurst needs to have more cars in the field. They can start by letting some of the second-tier teams race again in the 1000, that, for me, is what makes Bathurst special. The guys that do it tough finishing the race. I think the racing is better than ever at the Mount and the crowds are getting bigger annually.
As for the Championship, I would like to see more rounds. 13 is not enough nowadays, we need to have more, but at the same time not overdo it. Between 15-20 would be good in the future. I think the race formats are good. In terms of exporting to the world, I consider NZ to deserve at 2 rounds annually. Kiwi's have involvement with a number of teams and a number of drivers in the series are from NZ, or have a background. Beyond the Tasman, let's see how China goes before we think about any other destinations... |
