The Dakar Rally
Next week is the Dakar Rally. One of the longest rallies on earth starting from Paris to the sands of North Africa. Man and machine will be tested.

I hope the car class winner is either Jutta Kleinschmidt or Stephan Peterhansel. And hope our local Euro-parliament member does well, too!

don't think the VW is yet on the same pace as the Pajero .. so it will be one of the Mitsubishis ..... also Nissan are looking good with Vatanen and Shinozuka ....

Yes, the final legs of the rally will be in the deserts of Libya and Egypt instead of Senegal and the Western Sahara.

It's a sad world when Lybia's considered safer than someplace else.

I presume you don't have Foxtel DNQ. On Fox Sports there is a half hour program every night while the rally is on.

Is there an official website for the Dakar?
I unfortunately don't have Foxtel, so I will be waiting six months to see it on SBS! |

I saw the preview and Prologue on TV today. Everyone seems excited about the new direction the event is going next year, giving the impression that Paris and Dakar might be off the bill for more than a year.
The new Mitsubishi, is it just me or are some of the new 4WD cars looking more and more like the old T3 Prototypes |

The bodywork of VW's buggy is clearly "borrowed" from Volkswagen W12 supercar prototype!

Not much to the opening stages. The 1km prologue, then 43km on day 2 then 8km on day 3.
Stefan Peterhansel seems to have adapted very well to the cars (how many years since he switched from the bikes?). The buggies are outpaced at the moment, but they'll come into their own in the desert i suspect. |

Isn't it weird that in the marathons, there is this resurgence of 2WD cars, whereas in World Rallying (which arguably has the "easier" terrain) 4WD is a must? |

About buggies I hope so, I am waiting for the attack of Schlesser and Serviá in the Lybia desert. Last edited by E46; 4 Jan 2003 at 21:06. |

Lee, if you decide to do the Dakar, I will be your co-driver. I'd have loved to race it on a bike but unfortunately I am about 25 years too old for that now!
I'm for Richard Sanct and Alfie Cox in the bikes and I hope Nany Roma doesn't go mental again this year. I love that Jaguar and their drivers are TO DIE FOR! |
