Roberto Colciago set to defend his STCC title in 2002

(freely assembled from a report at STCC.se)

Last years STCC Champion, Roberto Colciago, who claimed the crown while acting as a support driver for the Kristoffersson Motorsport Audi team, has been announced, along with Tommy Kristoffersson and newcomer Marius Erlandsen, to pilot one of three KMS Audis again in 2002.

"That I stay in Sweden has a lot to do with the team, which I like a lot, and they gave me the possibility to win the championship. It's a good championship, with lots of good drivers, and the fans are also very good." says Colciago who elects to race in the STCC ahead of racing in the revamped ETCC, a decision that obviously will add a lot of the flair and excitment we saw last year when Colciago scorched the Swedish tracks en route to the championship.

So far the following teams and drivers are confirmed for the 2002 Swedish Touring Car Championship:

Kristoffersson Motorsports, Audi
Roberto Colciago
Tommy Kristoffersson
Marius Erlandsen

Picko Troberg Racing, Vauxhall
No drivers announced - looking towards a 3-car team

Volvo/Flash Engineering, Volvo
Janne "Flash" Nilsson
Edward Sandstrom

Krokstrom Racing(?), Volvo
Magnus Krokstrom
(note: switches over from Audi after buying a Volvo S40 used by Rickard Rydell in his championship-winning BTCC season in 1998)

Opel Team Sweden, Opel
Mattias Andersson

Some speculations:

Podium Racing, Audi(?)
No driver announced

???, Honda
Reports suggest a press conference to be held February 18th, where it will be announced that two JAS-Hondas, used in the ETCC last year, will be in STCC competition in 2002.

I'll post more news as I get it.

Michael H should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
thanks, Rustyfan.

the STCC is looking good for 2002.

I just hope that Alfa enter a team, and what about a Mondeo?

What about a BMW?

Honda should bring back Hubert Bergh as part of a 3 car Honda team.

I'm fairly sure we'll see both a couple of BMW's and a Mondeo on the grid - it's just that those teams haven't announced any details yet.

Some more details announced:

Picko Troberg Racing, Vauxhall
Nicklas Karlsson (raced Alfa Romeo last year)
Jan Lindblom (raced Volvo last year)

In regards to the Honda team which will use the JAS-Hondas from last year, I just learned that Thomas Engstrom is the guy behind the project, so sadly, I doubt we'll see the Chrysler Stratus on the grid for 2002.

However, there is a really interesting name figuring in the talks of one of the seats: Fabrice Walfisch (who was the driver of one of the JAS-Hondas in the 2001 ETCC). Apparently he has expressed interest in "doing a Colciago" and race in the STCC, piloting the Honda he drove last year down on the continent.

Personally I'm keeping my fingers crossed - if he does race in the STCC it'll have an international flavor never before seen in the STCC

Regarding Mondeos, Prodrive never sold the 2000 BTCC ones did they I think?
