1988 Dunlop RAC British Touring Car Championship - Discussion & Results
Time for the 1988 season. Information gathered from mainly late 1988 Autosport magazines including their most valuable seasonal review, a few YouTube clips, a points chart I was mailed some time ago and various pictures to be found around the net and not least other threaths on ten-tenths and TNF. I'm looking forward to your contributions - they're needed - but should make for some time well spend.
1988 Dunlop RAC British Touring Car Championship intro Same class structure as in 1987: Class A: above 2500 cc Class B: 2001-2500 cc Class C: 1601-2000 cc Class D: under 1600 cc Points for the top-6 in each class according to 9, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1 points with an additional point for fastest lap in the race. Late in 1987 it was announced that highlights of six races would be transmitted by the BBC, while Ford announced a bonus for top-3 overall results by Ford drivers with £15,000 for first, £10,000 for second and £5,000 for third – can't find my reference for the Ford-part, though. 13 races on the schedule, but ended on 12 with the cancellation of the Birmingham round. Round 1 of 13 of the 1988 Dunlop RAC British Touring Car Championship held on Sunday 27th March 1988 held over x laps on the x.xxx miles Silverstone circuit.
As I only have top-6 overall results, I have listed the known drivers class-by-class. Class A: 1./ #8 / Jerry Mahony / Dowson? / A / Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth / x laps / 25m02.12s 2./ #14 / Mike Newman / Goode / A / Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth / 25m06.20s 3./ #17 / Bob Sands / CC / A / Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth / 25m16.57s ? / #1 / Chris Hodgetts / MIL / A / Toyota Supra Turbo / 4th in class ? / #27/ Peter Buxtorf / Buxtorf / A / BMW 635CSi / 5th in class ? / #22 / Andy Rouse / Rouse / A / Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth / 6th in class DNF / #19 / Laurence Bristow / Rouse / A / Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth / retired DNF / #5 / Tim Harvey / Drury / A / Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth / retired DNF / #7 / Mike O'Brien / Docking / A / Holden Commodore VL / retired Fastest lap: Andy Rouse Class B: 4./ #33 / Frank Sytner / Prodrive / B / BMW M3 / 25m32.38s / 1st in class 5./ #32 / Mike Smith / Prodrive / B / BMW M3 / 25m36.35s / 2nd in class 6./ #36 / Godfrey Hall / Maguire / B / BMW M3 / 25m54.60s / 3rd in class ? / #44 / Alan Minshaw / Minshaw / B / BMW M3 / 4th in class ? / #38 / Dave Wallis / Drury / B / Ford Escort RS Turbo / 5th in class ? / #39 / Lionel Wiffen / Drury / B / Ford Escort RS Turbo / 6th in class Fastest lap: Frank Sytner Class C: DNS / #55 / James Shead / Maguire / C / VW Golf GTI 16V / did not start Fastest lap: unknown if any driver started. Class D: ? / #70 / Phil Dowsett / TOM'S GB / D / Toyota Corolla GT / 1st in class ? / #63 / Tony Crudgington / Crudgington / D / Toyota Corolla GT / 2nd in class ? / #? / Richard Belcher / unknown / Ford Escort RS1600i / 3rd in class Fastest lap: Phil Dowsett My notes tell me that the Jerry Mahony Arquati RS500 was run by Roger Dowson, who, as I have now learned, was involved with the Austin Rover Sport MG Metro Turbo programme of 1983-1984. The Bob Sands RS500 has been identified on the RS500 forums as a CC Motorsport entry. As David Cook ran the 1989 Vauxhall Astra GTE BTCC campain, would that mean that 1988 was the final year of CC Motorsport? Jesper Last edited by Jesper OH; 9 Jan 2010 at 10:30. 1988 Dunlop RAC BTCC Season Discussion & Results

I think you are right about the Sands CC car. It didn't do the whole season, in fact I think it withdrew after the first handful of rounds. Anyone confirm this? You may find the CC thread in History of further use chap: http://tentenths.com/forum/showthread.php?t=112579 |

A brief synopsis of the race from the review video: Rouse makes a fantastic start from the pole to comfortably lead fellow-front-row-starter Mahony into Copse. Bristow spins out of third into retirement at Copse and was followed into the gravel by a fast-starting Mike O'Brien, who would extract himself and rejoin at the tail of the field. Rouse's comfortable lead evaporates exiting Copse on lap 2 as a turbo hose blows off. The Kaliber Sierra would rejoin the race after repairs, setting the fastest Class A lap on the way to 16th place at the finish. New-leader Mahony is passed by a flying Goode, the Listerine Sierra appearing to have more power than the white Arquati car. However, it's all for naught as Goode's car retires with what appear to be engine problems. From there, Mahony carries on to a comfortable win. Frank Sytner takes the Class B win, whilst James Kaye (Volkswagen Golf GTi) and Phil Dowsett take the C and D class honors. Jesper, I should be able to help you out a bit with results and colour for 1988. I have the review video, a full collection of Motorsport from 1988, and full results for rounds 6, 7, 8 and 9 from Autosport. |

There's some '87 reviews that have been converted to DVD on there too, likely home converted versions but the one I brought plays properly. That might also be of interest to you. |

Added some info - lap times, positions and reasons for retirement. Confirmed that Wallis was a Drury entry, and Dowson ran Mahony's car. Hall's given time was that of Alan Minshaw. Rouse was a classified finisher.

Everything will be appreciated, chunterer. Seeing the Dowson/Arquati entry for Jerry Mahony is in fact more userfriendly than just Dowson. Since I always associate Laurence Bristow with the Rouse-Labatt's car of 1989-90, it is nice to be made aware that he raced in CAM Shipping colours in 1988. I will give this a try in my next installment.

A (not particularly good) pic from the TT- I think the Shell Gemini backing might have been a one-off for this race, as Gravett shared the car with Bristow http://www.flickr.com/photos/75026346@N00/4121101007/ |

I think it reappeared in '89 as the first JQF/Fina car for Gerrit van Kouwen (before they brought out the "active" car mid-season) and also reappeared in '90 for a handful of outings with Stuart Donnan, before he Thundersaloon-ed it. Other info for round 1 - Karl Jones was supposed to be there in the Asquith RS500, but a dock strike stopped some wheels arriving, and the team didn't think the car would be competitive on what it had (16s, as Avon tyres wouldn't fit the 17s they had) so they delayed until round 2 at Oulton. Geoff Kimber-Smith didn't have his Corolla ready in time - suspension issues. Mike O'Brien was planning to debut an updated ex-Brock VL-SS Commodore at round 2. |

On the same pages the Bristow/CAM Shipping/Rouse RS500 is for sale, Bristow the contact, Chris Hodgetts has two Corollas on offer while John Maguire has the class C winning +200 bhp David Sutton build Golf for sale among an Ecosse C2 car. O'Brien already had the ex-Brock VL for round 1 as a replacement of his '87 Les Small VK by round 1? Missed it on a first glance but there's also a Prodrive-built 1988 BMW M3 Evolution for sale by Paul Crumlish of Woodner Racing (Tel: 1-202-483-6569), if that is of any help? Graham Hathaway has a production saloon Cosworth with a 120 liter tank (Willhire 24/25 car?)! for sale as well. Jesper Last edited by Jesper OH; 16 Jan 2010 at 09:03. Reason: Additional info |

Dave Cook had already been running his own cars under the DCRS title in 1985in Thundersaloons (Woodman's Capri, then the Senator/Commodore), so CC may well have continued minus Dave either that or Pete Clark had decided to 'come back' after a couple of year break.
Mike O'Brien didn't run the VK in 1988, he was in the VL from his first appearance on the Silverstone Club circuit. |

What's interesting is that the phone number given appears to have a US (Washington) dialling code. 'Woodner Racing' was probably American race/rally driver Jon Woodner's outfit- he was Washington-based apparently. He died in a plane crash in the spring of '88, so possibly the team were selling off their cars? http://www.rallyracingnews.com/scca/rally/jwoodner.html He certainly rallied a Prodrive M3 in 1987, using it on some European events- the car carrying his distinctive US registration plate 'FAST-1', which IIRC had been seen on earlier rally outings in Europe- he did the RAC at least once in a Talbot Sunbeam Lotus in the early 80's http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y10...7MontBlanc.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y10...odnerVar87.jpg Interesting to see that he might have had a race M3 as well though... |
