9th April 2017
RACE 1 Alex Montgomery, MGBV8, won his first race in the championship after a long, close battle with Bruce Mitchell, Lotus Europa. A spin at the last corner demoted Mitchell to third, as he was passed by Alastair Baptie, Fiat X1/9. Ian Blacklin was fourth, in a Ford Capri 3000. Early leader, Tommy Gilmartin, Morgan +8, and second placed Harry Simpson, Ginetta G4R, retired after two laps following a collision, shown in video below. Miraculously, both were unhurt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0wPe-ow9TI Michael Longstaffe, MG Midget, competed in the championship for the first time. RACE 2 Montgomery was unable to start race two due to a problem on the starting grid. Mitchell took the lead and was never headed, despite the best efforts of Baptie, both drivers achieving new class records during this race. This was the first win for Mitchell. Blacklin came third, followed by Calum McRae, TVR350i. Next event is at Knockhill on May 7th. |

7th May 2017
Morgan +8 driver Tommy Gilmartin qualified fastest and won both races in front of a considerable crowd at sunny Knockhill. Great racing throughout the fifteen car grid, featuring new cars – Alasdair Coates’ Shelby Cobra and Max Horne, Ford Escort Twin Cam, and first Knockhill race for Scott Brennan, Ford Mustang. Coates and Raymond Boyd, Porsche 911, were second and third respectively in each race. Bruce Mitchell, Lotus Europa, took fourth place in race one and a new class record. Alex Montgomery, MGBV8 and Jimmy Crow, Escort RS2000, completed the top six in the first race. The order changed in race two, places four to six taken by Montgomery, Crow followed by Mitchell. Alastair Baptie, Fiat X1/9, leads the championship, having a perfect score of four class wins. On June 3rd &4th rounds five and six will take place, accompanied by the regular Scottish championships & HSCC Super Tourers, National Formula Ford and Junior Saloon Cars. Interesting. I knew a couple of road legal mallocks existed but thought they were "private" ventures, although I'm sure I read an interview with "the major" many, many years ago when he said he regretted not doing a 7 esque car for the road. The picture you have shown could have made a fabulous alternative to the Caterhams of the time.

2nd July 2017
Alastair Baptie, Fiat X1/9,extended his championship lead after two class wins at a poorly supported meeting. Several drivers were absent due to mechanical problems, holidays etc. Crowd numbers were noticeably less than at the previous event. Despite the small entry, there was close racing at the throughout the field. Both races were won by fastest qualifier, Tommy Gilmartin, Morgan +8. Bruce Mitchell, Lotus Europa, was second on each occasion. Former Fiesta racer, Charlie Cope, joined the championship in a VW Golf GTI 1800. An impressive first event in this car resulted in two third place finishes. Neil MacKay made a guest appearance in his smart looking Austin Mini. The next event, on 20th August, will be the first run in reverse direction at Knockhill by The Scottish Motor Racing Club. Hopefully, there will be an increased number of Classics competitors. |

An exciting day’s reverse direction racing at Knockhill last Sunday, included the first victory for John Kinmond, Rover SD1 and a win for regular front-runner, Tommy Gilmartin, Morgan +8.
The new track layout proved successful for Classic competitors, qualifying and races passing without incident. (Some other formulae experienced accidents and delays.) Fastest qualifier, Gilmartin, won the first race by ten seconds from Raymond Boyd, Porsche 911. Charlie Cope, Golf GTI, was third, Kinmond fourth, Alastair Baptie, Fiat X1/9, fifth. Ian Blacklin, Ford Capri, came sixth, just ahead of Mario Ferrari in an Alfasud Sprint – both cars circulating as if they were attached, for much of the race. Calum Mcrae, TVR, was next, with William Conway, Mini Cubman, Grant Allan, Porsche 914 in tenth place. Alex Montgomery raced his recently acquired FIA MGB at Knockhill for the first time and took eleventh place. The Lotus Europa of Bruce Mitchell was declared a non-finisher after a spin close to the end of the race. Misfortune for Michael Longstaffe who retired his MG Midget after five laps. Gilmartin couldn’t start race two due to gearbox and engine problems. Kinmond led from lap one, chased by Boyd, less than half a second behind at the end. Less than a second separated third placed Baptie from Mitchell in fourth place. The remaining competitors finished in order: Blacklin, Ferrari, McRae, Conway, Montgomery. Grant Allan retired his Porsche 914,after having climbed to sixth place, on his first outing with this car. Disappointment too for Cope whose race ended during lap four. Photos attached. The next event is at Knockhill on 10th September. |
