Toronto Race Thread (including qualifying spoilers)
well here we go on the Streets of Toronto.
Check out their site at www.grandprixtoronto.com There is a big History at this track going way back to 1986 WINNERS LIST 1986 : Bobby Rahal 1987: Emerson Fittipaldi 1988: Al Unser Jnr 1989: Michael Andretti 1990: Al Under Jnr 1991: Michael Andretti 1992: Michael Andretti 1993: Paul Tracy 1994: Michael Andretti 1995: Michael Andretti 1996: Adrian Fernandez 1997: Mark Blundell 1998: Alex Zanardi 1999: Dario Franchitti 2000: Michael Andretti 2001: Michael Andretti 2002: Cristiano da Matta 2003: Paul Tracy 2004: Sebastien Bourdais 2005: Justin Wilson just writing that list I didnt realize that Michael Andrtti has won here 7 times , thats pretty amazing. Gil de Ferran holds the lap record here with a time of 57.143 secs set back in 1999 , so for 7 years that record has stood , will it be broken this weekend ? Should be a very exciting weekend I hope |

Just for the record, this race was how I got started with CART (now Champ Car), as a lowly flagger. I remember being blown away by the people who came from all over to help us for the inaugural race -- my crew included a blue flagger from Washington DC and a funny guy from Chicago named Jimmy Swintal.
Now I'm one of the people who flies in for races myself, and Jimmy's still there. As the Grateful Dead said, "What a long strange trip it's been..." Remember, back in '86 the two big races on the card were Champ Cars and ARS, the series that later became Indy Lights. Support race was a round of the Players Challenge for Camaros and Firebirds, and featured the first of many red flags at the Princes Gates. I probably still have the program around here somewhere -- I know I still have the participant t-shirt. keke who'll be watching on TV for people I know |

think AJ will go three for three?
the boy seems really hot right now, although a street race is a long way removed from an airport track, and a natural road course... |

While I'm thinking about it, what is the weather looking like for tomorrow, and particularly Sunday?

So, Wilson on pole! Allmendinger alongside.
Bourdais and Tracy on row 2. da Matta still working on it, in 8th. No surprises down the field, maybe Ranger a bit higher than usual, Clarke a bit lower (16th). |

Pastorelli not running because he and the Rocketsports team have run out of sponsorship monies.

Terrific quali. Aj and Bourdais were trading fast laos and seemed to be the ones to beat. Everyone was watching Bourdais at the end of the session when Wilson took the top stop. A complete surprise. AJ looked quite dissapointed.
Bourdais looks fast however. Silky smooth driver. You can see why he is able to be so consistently fast. |

Go Wilson!
Here's hoping the top four guys make it through the first lap this time so we can have a race. |

Apparently both Kasemets and Tagliani will start the race, despite their warm-up wrecks.

Yes, the arrival of Allmendinger has really spurred them on - he's won every race he's driven in the Forsythe team!
Paul Tracy must be feeling at bit sick |

I think I'm a bit sick as a Tracy fan!
No, it is positive stuff indeed. A.J. is doing a great job and it just underlines the importance of being happy in your working environment and the effect it has on your performance. There are other examples that I shan't bore you all with in here. |

Nice work by AJ again. Maybe there is a title battle afterall!
(He says foolishly, as AJ will probably have wrapped it up 2/3rds through at this rate) |

Damn, we got screwed out of a top 5 result today...
I wonder what was Philippe thinking... they weren't even braking yet and he barrelled down on Oriol. For many laps the PKV cars were the quickest on track, and I think Oriol could have been in podium positions on pace, not so much on strategy... |

We were trying to figure that out too, Jordi. Derek Daly said Phillipe must have gotten into the marbles on the inside but there was no brake smoke, no nutthin' until he plowed into Servia (at the 200 brake marker too, it appeared, when he should have started braking at 300 if he didn't have his nose next to Servia, altho the camera probably foreshortened the view*). And later several cars braked right where Phillipe's tire marks were from the hit and did not seem affected by marbles.
So brake failure? Brain failure? Or "just one-a them racing incidents"? * I didn't just look at the camera angle on this one. I estimated how far up-track the cars were from station 2C when they hit. I worked 2C a couple of years ago and it's right at the 100 marker, unless they've moved it. Big hit, glad to see everyone's okay. But I bet we never hear why. keke |

From TV, it looks like brain fade. As if Nelson expected Oriol to take the normal line for the corner... but Oriol didn't.
