Invincible should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Riverside

The track which hosted the 1960 American GP, can anyone tell me what happened to the track because I believe its no longer in use due to the fact the last bit of action i've seen from it was in 1986.

Can anyone give a track map to it and the facts to when it closed and why?

Hello, Folks,

This is a very sad story.

Riverside closed in 1988, when the land was bought by real estate developers.

In brief words, the Northernmost area is today part of a shopping mall parkling lot. There is a housing development (sprawl) that occupies a part of the mid-section of the track.

The rest (actually most of it) is all abandoned. I have been there recently and the there is even less remains that those shown in the (very good) http://www.tamsoldracecarsite.net/RiversideToday.html website.

Amongst all former circuits I visited - Chimay (B), Rheims (F), Piracicaba (BR), Santa Monica (USA), Palm Springs (USA), Bremgarten (CH), Montreux (CH), etc. - this is the one that really makes my heart break.

No kidding, I almost cried when I saw it.

Muzza

P.S.: I posted a thread today about Bridgehampton, a road course in Long Island - used to be a Can-Am and sportscar classic - that succumbed a similar death in 1997. Any information about Bridgehampton would be greatly appreciated. Help to preserve the memory of motorsport.

The land was always intended to be a shopping mall I believe...too bad...dry dusty track but home of some GREAT racing...

What a place...I have my best racing memories at that track. I was fortunate enough to be able to race atlantics in the so. pac. division in the late 70's. We raced on all the road courses on the west coast, nothing was more fun than Riverside. The track was easy to drive so you could concentrate on racing. Only 11 or 12 gear changes a lap, depending on what gear you used in turn 9, made a very average driver like me run very well. It was great for spectators too. We lost a real piece of racing history when someone decided we needed more "low income housing".
