What now for 888 and the Holden teams do we think? Camaro? Split and look for other manufacturers? Seems unlikely. Sad time for Aussie car industry but probably not totally unexpected some day.

I found this to be very sad news.
Raises big questions of the future of the Holden brand, not just Supercars involvement. However, I have a theory. In certain parts of the generalist media, the SUV is becoming a catch-all blame tool for environmental concerns. Manufacturers are right to cash in now, but I think they should also continue to invest in 'regular' cars too because as quick as the tide turned to SUVs, it could also wash back. |

Not many options for Holden in Supercars post 2021. Camaro is set to be discontinued at the end of 2022 and the HSV version sold here doesn't wear a Holden badge. Import and rebadge an Impala?

A bigger question than the news today, what is going to happen to this sub forum? We ain't there yet but it is coming at high speed. I would hope the admin team have a plan in their back pocket because they must have known this would happen. If they didn't then they were the only ones on here that didn't. I guess it will just naturally wither away as we all lose interest. Pecky's view on this would be interesting to hear...

If it is a silhouette series manufacturers will not participate either and to make the problem even more complicated large cheap sedans such as the Falcon & Holden no longer exist and I can't see smaller family sedans existing in large numbers for very much longer either. what do they expect when they import rubbish - they would have been better off importing a RWD V8 from the States instead of some German 4cyl FWD rubbish
As an aside the Aussie market is flooded with SUV's, our whole work sedan fleet has been replaced by Toyota RAV4's in the last few weeks |

Just because a car is a German 4cyl FWD doesn't mean it's rubbish, both the VW Golf GTI and VW Passat are much loved, as are the Ford Fiesta ST and Ford Focus ST, also the Mini Cooper, Clubman and Countryman plus the equivalent BMW 1 series (the new FWD)... All engineered in Germany and all very nice cars.
As the BMW 1 series moving from RWD to FWD shows, most drivers have no need for RWD. |

The German Commodore is a more than competent well made and well engineered alternative to the Mondeo, Camry, Sonata , Optima, Mazda6 & such. But buyers weren' t given a reason to buy one. Have you seen the Skoda Superb Sportline for around $50k ?
The problem is that a german Commodore couldn't be marketed as Holdens image has always been based around it's Australian-ness. There was also no halo car from HSV to give the current model a performance image. With the previous model the mainstream SV6 looked like the little brother of the SSV8. Ford has a range of competent cars & a mixed bunch of SUV's but still only sells Mustangs in any volume. And that number is going down. They have also had the Ranger to take on the Hilux very successfully. Holden have had a sub-standard range of Daewoos and Chevs unsuccessfully trading on the rugged Holden image for decades now. Vehicles such as the Epica, Malibu and Acadia were answers to questions nobody was asking in the first place. Its all well and good to say that the future is all SUV's and Light Trucks as thats where the action is but not enough people want or need the poor range of vehicles offered in this class by the Red lion. What happens to the Corvette now after the Camaro has failed to open wallets with its exorbitant pricing compared to the Mustang ? This is a nightmare for dealers , some of whom have been burnt not too many years ago by the sudden axing of the Opel range. Merry Christmas |

It is absolutely incredible that if you look at the Supercars .com site that as of this time there is NO mention of the Commodore finishing.

It's interesting to see Holden killing off cars that aren't SUV/4x4. Recently saw a Cadillac CTS-V bodied test car driving around with a a current spec Caddy, Camaro and VF Commodore. The Caddy test car while had a camouflage scheme, I did manage to see a small Holden logo on it and the guy driving had a Holden logo on his shirt. So it was assumed that the CT5 would be the latest iteration of imported Commodore.
Wonder if Mr. Walkinshaw will take over and bring it in as a HSV spec and badged machine? |
