Car numbers
From the past to the present I saw how the numbers of the cars came shorter and shorter... In the 80s and first part of 90s you could see well them in the nose and on rear wingplates, later the numbers shortened more and side numbers were putted in front of or in the rear of the sidepods... Now only puts the number smaller on the nose, in a mode you can never see well it when you see the car in action!

It simply isn't enopugh room on the cars for "big" numbers. Even though they'd use maximum space available, they'd still be illegible. Leave them as they are now, I recognize the cars anyway.

Just learn the helmet colours. Some teams have other little identifiers - different colour mirrors etc.

Maybe they could electronically enhance the car numbers for tv viewers. Similar to (LOL!) what the Americans did to hockey - by electronically drawing a "comet tail" on the puck for viewers who could not follow the puck during a game...

I say put little flags coming off the snorkels with the drivers number on it, their nationality or the colours of their helmets...

I think it's easy enough to recognise the helmets and the different cars - I can't remember any of the different numbers the drivers are meant to have anyway - except for number 1 of course.

Only driver easily recognizable from his helmet colours is Justin Wilson: His head is high enough to actually see the helmet. Then there's Heidfeld and da Matta: Only top of their helmet is visible, when in car.

Button is #17. And last year it was De la Rosa. And in 2001 it was Raikkonen. And in 2000 it was Diniz. And in 1999 it was Herbert. And in 1998 it was Herbert, again. And in 1997 it was used by Larini, Fontana and Morbidelli. And in 1996 Rosset used it...

I like the numbers, although I don't use them to identify the cars. I think they add to the look of F1 cars.

I'm an F1 encyclopedia for this kind of things, Red! I could tell you the whole field of each year until 1995 from memory. Before 1995, a hell of a lot of drivers drove in F1, so I can't remember them...
And until 1974 they would use a different number for each race! (With some I remember: #36-Gurney at Spa'67, #5-Clark at the first DFV win, #22-Rindt at Monza'70  )

 yeah, I know exactly what you mean.... Actually I can remember lots of F1 trivia myself, but not to the driver's/car's numbers. (and mostly I remember where I can fing the information and quickly retrieve it... )
