IRL tires in cold weather
I am kind of hoping Indy 500 qualifying is completely washed out this weekend. It might be safer for the drivers. The temps in Indy this weekend could be in the 40's F. Which is pretty cold for very quick open wheel cars in my opinion.
I can't remember any open wheel event be it CART, IRL of F1 that has been postponed due to cold tempertures. But there has to be a cut off level with the tires. |

the IRL has tire warmers for such an occasion (they used them at watkins glen last year) and with an extra warmup lap they should have no problem getting them up to temp.

The rumor in the media center today was that if Saturday and Sunday get washed out, they will go on Monday....
Indy does not want to go into the final weekend with no one qualified... BUt the past three years it has been cold, cloudy and wet....they take trhee warm-up laps before qualifying... I know.... I froze my butt off on those three Pole Days...and they were temps similar to what we will see this weekend...low 50s at best.... Wear your long johns and drink a lot of beer if you're going....you'll need both... |
