IMSA WEC prototype tyre/tire compounds
What tire compounds are allowed in WEC races? Is the 24hr allowed different compounds than the other races?

In regular season rounds, two tire compounds are allocated. At Le Mans, all 3 can be used. For Spa it was S and M. |

Never got warm enough to use the hard tire. That would have been nice to see at the 24, but the weather had other plans! I hope they do the sensible thing and bring them to Sao Paulo.

I think listening the the obligatory Michelin PR blokes in comms the hard is for the insane heat of Bahrain potentially LM, Fuji etc, to make a tyre work at Spa and then 35 degrees in say Brazil is tough!!
Davidson gave a good prod by saying I think the hard yes would wear less but it would also not really get warm enough to work properly in the cold, so would offer a huge laptime reduction, and would potentially get cold tear etc and more wear as the driver would be trying more to get it to work? |

I’d love to have a go at LMU but our new babies have taken our office as a bedroom so the PC is sat in my wardrobe at the moment. I’m biding my time though…

Back to the point of tyres, going by what the comms team were saying during the lemans broadcast, I had no idea the soft - med - hard tyres were actually not only a different compound but also a different construction, so the soft tyre actually was a softer (springier) tyre with more inherent damping and softer sidewall.

While I’m still waiting for my apology for stealing my photo we have some tyre news.
Michelin have decided to not update the tyres next year for WEC and IMSA. This is after the CoTA test last week. They’d like to test more and are happy enough with the current tyres. Article at DSC: https://www.dailysportscar.com/2024/...s-to-2026.html |
