Round 18 - Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
Penultimate race of the season this weekend in the Abu Dhabi dusk. I probably wont have time to get a preview written up so we might as well get the discussion under way!

A pity about the track. The only fun bit is probably the first sector. I like the pitlane exit though.

DRS in two zones, so Alonso shouldn't have any problems getting by Petrov.
What? It doesn't matter this year? Damn! http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/96027 No wet weather to spice things up, so let's hope the DRS does its job. |

I didn't know what you meant at first, but I am now guessing you're referring to your liking of many circuits and general positivity I have alluded to.
Alexander Rossi - nothing against him, but someone at the BBC should have given him lessons in talking into the microphone, or adjusted the sound to compensate. His low pitch was barely audible at times and I had to concentrate to undestand him. |

Love that onboard shot of Vettel. Great to see the concentration in his eyes. F1's getting better with clever camera angles.

I was watching practice on iPlayer like I usually do, and I got bored. I really enjoy listening to the commentary during GP practices, but nowadays and especially at a track like today, I'm getting more and more bored with Formula 1, on the screen that is. It hasn't helped that I have started reading Motor Sport mag again, and I am taken back to times when GP cars ( as well as gorgeous sports cars like 917s and T70s etc ) didn't stick to the road like they are glued down. It is the playstation generation of racing now, with drivers not having much to fear really if they get it badly wrong.
I enjoy today's F1 when the tracks are wet, or when they're driving at Monaco, even when it's dry there :-) |

They can't unlearn everything that made those things better. Maybe it should be that 60's and 70's tyre technology should be made mandatory on current F1 cars ? With regards to qualifying. The current qualifying set up is much more preferable to anything in the past. Sometimes then the track would see no action at all for the first 45 minutes and then everyone would go out and expect to get a clean lap in the last 15 minutes. Or you would get a situation where no one went out on a Saturday because it was raining and qualifying had already been sorted out on a Friday. I tried to explain the latter scenario to a relatively new F1 viewer, and he looked at me like I'd just shot his dog! |

Is there a smilie for tongue firmly in cheek. Just your use of the word race...
Compete with another or others to see who is fastest at covering a set course or achieving an objective. Has anybody told Seb that he's meant to compete? |

Yeah why they cannot just miss out the chicane at turns 5+6! That is the whole problem of this track because it doesn't matter how long the straight is, there is too much of a concertina effect due to the chicane. It would be a much better circuit without the chicane damnit!!!

and so far we still not had a Vettel DNF (I think he is due one of those) and that might spice things up if we get a Vettel DNF.

Breaking news in the build up to Abu Dhabi: Lewis Hamilton fan stops caring about Lewis Hamilton.
Or at least, whilst I wish him the best on track, I never ever want to hear him interviewed ever again. Every headline involves him running his mouth about something. "Hamilton bullish about Abu Dhabi chances" "Hamilton wants to clear the air with Massa" "Hamilton says boss's claims 'rubbish'" "Hamilton want 'happy bubble' for 2012". This is from the last two days alone!! Shut up please, Lewis! As for the GP itself, I'm looking forward to seeing what DRS does here. Some of the racing was reasonably close last year, we just didn't get much wheel to wheel due to the aero problem. Hopefully that hurdle can be overcome this year and we can have some good fights. |

I think if another 2 km was added to the two main straights, then you might be able to overtake there!
In all seriousness, it is another Tilke track. I suspect we hear Lewis being quite bullish about this weekend. He always seems good around Abu Dhabi. I think he might be on for another pole, but as for the race win, well Mr. Vettel might be on for that. Vettel just seems to have everything covered. Mind you, his team is just a 'soft drinks' company'! It will be mainly a battle of the teammates. With Button trying to hang on to the number 2 spot in the WDC(with Alonso and Webber breathing down his neck). Plus, Massa has been given a coded message from Ferrari to up his game. There is also the battle at Mercedes - can Nico beat Schumi? |

Nice to see Vergne press Alguersuari and Grosjean ahead of Petrov in first practice.
Wickens didn't do too bad by the looks of it even if that car is now 2 seconds behind the HRT's!!! |

Ferrari appear to have troubles.
Interesting to see Sam Michael in the McLaren pits. |

Yeah, slightly odd that they released him early - clearly nothing to take away with him of any great secrecy then!!
