Mercedes signs Jan Heylen for Euro F3
Mercedes-Benz signs Heylen
The Belgian press is getting very excited about the news that Jan Heylen, who won the Formula Ford Festival in November, has been signed on a four-year contract with Mercedes-Benz, with the aim of getting into Formula 1 in 2006. The 22-year-old Belgian will race this year in the planned European Formula 3 series with a Mercedes engine and will then move up to Formula 3000 if all goes to plan. Heylen has been racing since 1992, enjoying a full and varied career in karting before moving into single-seaters in 2001 in the British Formula Ford series. After a season with Tim Sugden Motorsport he moved to the Van Diemen factory team this year and finished ssecond in the British series. Sourced from http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns07521.html |

thats good news.
Its the target of everyone to get a major manufactuer behind them , so it looks like Jan has fallen on his feet . |

Well done Jan, surprised at Mercedes decision though, they've tested many drivers for this scheme including Jamie Green, Danny Watts and it's Jan that gets the deal. Must know what they're doing though.
Just slightly surprised as although Jan drove well at the Festival he was quite disappointing during the championship season this year and hadn't set the world alight during initial F3 winter testing. Good luck to him though, hope he goes all the way |

I guess Tim Sugden and Steve O'Rourke don't need to spend the next three months looking for a lorry load of cash to run him in British F3.
Well done Jan. ;-) |

Button was offered a similar deal in 98 after he won fford. Ron now has him in his pocket and if he doesnt race f1 with mclaren, he wont with anyone! It a sort of good and bad deal, depends on how everything pans out. Bloody lucky bloke though - he didnt look that good at the festival out and out speed wise.

Very good chance for Jan Heylen! He'll drive for free, and with a good manufacter that will plan his future. Good story, but the most talent driver in Euro F.3 2003 ha not signed yet...but he is arriving!
Eh, eh..... |

he'll do well, now money's one less pressure to think about. shame about it being the euro f3 series though, then again guess they'd have to get a mercedes team in england otherwise.

McLaren have so many drivers under contract they could start their own series. But then ROn wouldnt be able to complain about people cheating. |

He hasn't actually set the world alight in cars yet, although he's definitely quick, but he was absolutely spectacular to watch in karts at Genk in Belgium. And a good name to boot.
