Erm US honda and Hayes disqualified for using a modified crankshaft
Oh dear, big mistake from the team that ahve made the 200 into the world most pointless race that only Americans care about! |

I'm no Duhamel fan, and I don't think he should be on the factory team, but his low position is due to a low side. He did manage to finish though.
The supersport and superstock races were epic. Superbike was crap per usual. Yamaha wont be able to close the gap and Honda and Kawasaki are stuck developing brand new bikes. |

Is Ben Spies only competing in SBK this year? Wasn't he doing WSS last year as well?
Where did those BMW's come from? Mladin beating Spies huh? Not bad for such an old man. It doesn't do Spies his reputation any good! |

Yes, Spies will only run Superbike plus the Moto GP wild card races.
Spies botched the start and that was that. Spies did run about three laps in a row quicker than Mladin, but then gave it back with an error. Race done. The two of them run such close lap times that once a gap is established it's pretty much over. Tommy Hayden had a great start, but then ran wide shortly after. Hope he wins a few this year. And no, I don't think Spies loses any luster when he finishes second to Mladin. That guy is freaking awesome. Too bad we can't see him running against the likes of Haga and Bayliss. BMW ran a few bikes in FX for the 200. Not sure if that will continue during the season or not. |

It's a bit dissapointing Spies has chosen to compete in AMA again. It's coming across as a safe choice, after Suzuki have shown so much interest in him to ride for them in Motogp, it's like he's almost assured of a place in that class. It would have been great to see him race in WSBK, so he could show his true colours and learn some of the tracks Motogp is racing at as well. |

As for Spies not running Moto GP this year, he already had a contract in place with Yoshimura Suzuki from well back. Now I know on the surface you'd think he could have gone straight to Moto GP with Suzuki's blessing, but maybe not. Yoshimura have strong pull. And maybe Rizla Suzuki didn't want to run Spies with Vermeulen just yet. Tough to know. |

Yosh kept him here, and they signed Capirossi for a 1 year deal, however, if he gets 3rd, he gets another ride. Look for Ben to run MotoGP next year for Suzuki, I suspect.

Sorry J, I do like endurace races with two riders and strategy etc, but teh 200 is basically a flat out race with tyre and fuel stops thrown in because the bikes cant go that long!
Proper endurance racing at night is a huge skill and one to be into. And come on, Suzuka is only relevant to the Japanese makers, no one else really gives a stuff!! Even most of the big time riders hate it! |

I guess the diff with Suzuka is that its a proper endurnace race really. The only different thing with the 200 used to be guys like Lawson, Fogarty, Russell going along and racing on the banking,
You dont get that at all now so its lost its appeal Maybe with the Superbikes back it might be possible for the big makes to entice a superbike or GP rider to the race |

One the main reasons for many riders staying in the US or even going over there to race is money. The top AMA riders earn huge salaries, probably only matched by teh top few GP riders.
Mladin is so in tune with teh AMA series, in relaity the only guy who can realistically challenge him apart from Spies is Duhamel coz he has so much knowledge and set up experience of the AMA tracks. Hayden only really beat Mat coz Mladin was on the worst 750 at the time, was early 2000's I think and Suzuki made an utterly useless 750 when they were trying to push teh awful TL1000, was an atrocious bike really, even Chili coudn tget anywhere on it. AMA is comfort zone in a way, but its not easy unless you are on a Yosh bike!! Even then you ahve to beat Mat or Spies, look at how awful Tommy Hayden has been?? |

Tommy Hayden has a lot to prove this year. He was not near 100% health last year and found the Suzuki to be completely different to what he's used to. Mat and Ben both ride the front extremely hard, and Tommy couldn't ride it that way. He finally got a new fork and started to get happier. He showed some good pace during Daytona. He was second behind Mladin when he went wide into 2 trying for the lead. That was that. If he can't win some races this year I think he'll be in trouble for 2009.

Matt Mladin had a shocker in 02 by his standards & Nicky Hayden was the young gun just passing through on his way to a Moto GP world title in 06. Pity they didnt have head to head battles that year, but they did in 01...
2002 Championship Standings 1 Nicky Hayden - 488 2 Eric Bostrom - 451 3 Miguel Duhamel - 381 4 Pascal Picotte - 350 5 Aaron Yates - 345 6 Brian Parriot - 308 7 Mathew Mladin - 300 8 Doug Chandler - 294 9 Brian Livengood - 294 10 Jamie Hacking - 260 |

Educate me please: in those 2001 head to head battles, who came across as the stronger rider, Hayden or Mladin? Was Hayden head and shoulders above the likes of Duhamel?
What should we expect of Spies in Motogp on a non-American track? I don't see him being very competitive straight out of the blocks, but I've been wrong (many times) before... |

in 2001 Nicky had a few costly crashes from memory & finished 3rd behind Mladin & Eric Bostrom, Duhamel came 5th - Nicky well & truly had Miguels measure, though Duhamel was probably sore from crashing i would agree with you on Ben Spies probably not being overly-competitive... i dont think the suzuki will be good enough for him & it will be hard jumping on a machine & into a series like Moto GP where his rivals have been racing at that level all season... You also gotta remember that the RC51 was not that quick off the bat, especially on Dunlops. The bike was designed pretty much to run on Michelins.
Even the 8H bikes ran on Michelin which is rare in Japan. I think the late GSXR750's were really not that competitive, its amazing that Mladin won any titles wikth one to be honest, but then again I would sugest that the Yosh bikes were probably the qquickest outside of Japan. Remember also that Ryo and Kitagawa were right on the pace in Sugo and Jappan |

Yep, healthy times in the AMA Superbike series...
http://www.superbikeplanet.com/2008/Apr/080415x.htm http://www.superbikeplanet.com/2008/Apr/080415h4x.htm http://www.superbikeplanet.com/2008/Apr/080415-brea.htm http://www.superbikeplanet.com/2008/Apr/080416a.htm Yes chunder, those are links. You might even try reading them! In short, the NASCAR boys now have control of AMA Pro Racing. And you guessed it, they want to follow the NASCAR mold. They are contemplating scraping the 1000cc superbike class and replacing it with Formula Xtreme. They'll add their Moto ST series, which is a three tier power to weight ratio series that runs outdated bikes. Moto ST also has rolling starts and longer races. Spec tires and spec fuel are also being considered. The death of the 1000cc superbike class is not for certain, but it doesn't look good. Suzuki are ****ed. Yamaha don't know what to do, and we have yet to hear from Kawi and Honda. More to come out at Barber. |
