Becoming a Touring Car Mechanic?
Alright guys/girls i'm new to the forum and just got a question about becoming a touring car mechanic?
Now i'm a vauxhall man myself I do engine conversions on vauxhalls for mates and fix parts for people and rebuild engines and sell them on, but this is all a hobbie but I would like to get more into it and would love to eventually become a race mechanic. So I was wondering what you guys would say is the best way to get into it. By day I'm actually a sport coach, and truning 23 next month and i'm thinking more about my life and that i would like to get into the mechanic side more. I have looked into going to uni to do a race mechanics course but i'm struggling to get in anywhere as i'm such a late entry and I wouldn't be starting till 2011 if I did join, which I don't mind doing but was wondering if there would be another way of getting into the industry, as if I did the course in 2011 I would be 28 by the time I left. I'm currently looking at 888 race engineering to see if they would be up for me to do some shadow work for free to see what they actually do and give a helping hand when needed. Or are there any companies on here that are looking for a volunteer, to lend a helping hand just to get into the industry and see if I can work my way up. I'm based in Reading but willing to travel as this would be a start to a whole new career. Any help or info would be great |

most smaller teams within the paddock are in need of 'lags' for the wkend, someone to scrap tyres, do the fuel, make tea and so on, from experience thats the best way to get in. a mate of mine started like that 3 yrs ago, he is now a FPA mechanic, clio cup mechanic and helps us at eurosaloons. however, his day job is at a VW dealership. paywise at the tourers, its peanuts! but you gotta start somewhere. |

We are based in Reading and run a TVR Sagaris GT car with a Vauxhall engine. Well ok its a 6.2 litre Chevy LS, but same family. We've had a number of people help us out over the years - one is now with Arena (Ford Focus in BTCC) and another at Chad (British and FIA GT) Getting some race experience first is usually the best way in Kind regards Andy |

Same position!
Hi guys, i am new to this forum and am after a bit of advise in the right direction.
I know this post is a year old but its the exact same position i am in! I am currently at college studying engineering but its not that specified to motorsport in any way. I have a real passion for cars and bikes too. I am currently 18 and live in Exeter/ Devon and wish to get on board with the motorsport scene. If there is anyone who knows of any companys or racing team in the area i would love to work for them even for free just to get the experience would be great! Many Thanks Harry |
