McLaren to buy back Mercedes?
Apparently, McLaren have taken out a large loan that could see them buying out Mercedes.
Seems a bit hard to believe. But stranger things have happened at sea. http://www.pitpass.com/44598-McLaren...-title-chances |

Shouldn't that be "buy out" Mercedes?
Wonder what engines they'll be using then. |

I seem to remember the buy back being part of an agreement from a few years ago as Mercedes originally wanted to buy out McLaren but instead they bought Brawn.

Does anyone think that from 2014 that McLaren might start building their own engines?

P.U.R.E. seems to be based on subcontracting out almost all the work which to me is not theway to go designing and building a race engine.

Most companies contract out some part of manufacture to companies more specialised. Esp. machining, where it may not be cost effective to have the very high precision gear required in house. My company (semiconductors, not engines) design in house, but manfacture is done by a third party. Seems to work well for us given the >$4B cost of a new fab.... As long as your design is OK, I see no problems. |

I'm not an expert on that field, but from my own experience, with my company and the one I work for now, this must be done in a strict way, that guarantee a high level of quality, so the third party companies are chosen carefully and are supervised through the whole process. So, if it's done that way, I can't see any problems with it. |

McLaren probably need to do their own engines because of the road car programme. Last time they went their own way with TAG it was rather successful. I think Mahle is the road car engine partner.

Seems a little strange, but hey like someone else said stranger things have happened. If they were to start building engines then they should call them Bruce's.

Several known engineers have moved to McLaren from HPE, the most recognized being Axel Wendorf recently, and Ilmor and there's no way they were hired just to build a roadcar engine.
I thought it was Ricardo, not Mahle that were the engines partner? |
