The Lotus type 73 F3 was fitted with a Novamotor Ford twin cam in 1972

That was a 1600 though. From memory Novamotor did a number of 1600 F3 engines. I'm pretty sure the spacer plate would not have been legal in F3. Novamotor dominated the early years of the 2 Litre F3 of course, with their Toyota-based engines.

Yes Nova did a lot of very special "things" with there Engines .
Yes they Build a 2 Liter TC-Engine with a spacer plate . For exaple : They used the 701 Block , maschined the two middele bearings out and used a 3 bearing steel crankshaft.......... I have to rebuild one next week . I send some photos then........... |

The plate was used to make the engine 2 litre using the original lotus block but you could also achieve it using the later, taller blocks, an 84mm stroke crank and 90mm bores. This does need liners but works well and produces a far more reliable engine than one usingbthe plate. Holbay and Novamotor both produced 2 litre engines in period. Neil Brown may have also done them. Some tuners stuck to carbs and others went for injection. These engines fell out of favour during 75 and into 76 as the Toyota based engine, whilst being heavier, produced both better power and torque. I raced my Van Diemen GRD with a 2 litre twin cam as that was what it used in period. It's original engine was a Holbay unit.

90mm X 84mm would give you 2138cc, so a bit above the F3 2 litre limit. More likely a bore of 87mm with the 84mm stroke to give 1998cc.
It would be interesting to hear what the dimensions of Roger's Novamoter's engine are. |
