Salary Cap For V8SC Drivers??

Not sure if they pinched the idea from our fantasy competition or not but it seems someone in the powers that be reckon a salary cap for driver payments would be a good idea

Story Here

Langers should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Would be interested in what Whincup's take home has been over the past few years.

good way to contain costs.

The story by Paul Gover started all this. Just like the NRL who knows who earns what, James Phelps came out and said $$$$ Davo was on $ 800,000 per year but nobody bar the driver, manager & team owner knows who gets paid what. Just a PR stirred up story. And who cares?

Speculation will always be not much better than an educated guess.

The only definitive amount we know was the $1m per year to Mr C Lowndes when at 00 Motorsport.

It's not really needed tbh, the teams will always pay what they believe they can afford, if the drivers don't feel they're earning enough they can always try an move overseas in GT racing of something similar. They'll find they're very well paid.

I'm struggling to think of a reason for this. If the top teams are forced to spend less on driver salaries, they'll have more to spend on development and they will get faster...

Further, how do they manage pay drivers and there are at least a dozen of those...

Are driver salaries really that out of control?

How much money will it really save, considering any money saved there would just be re-directed into the cars, considering the cars are a much more cruical aspect to the whole empire.... its not like a game of footy

Dont mind the concept of a contract recognition board

A place to go to assure compliance, to arbitrate any early exits, in a standard way

The mid-season poachings would be worth looking into. Especially in a time where things are pretty unstable already.

It's a completely stupid idea that makes zero sense.

Motor racing is completely driven by money. Even at the pro level drivers may bring money, sponsors, patrons, manufacturers or B2B deals to the table to fund their drive or augment their income. How in the world would that be policed?

The only way they could do a salary cap idea would be on total team spend.
Drivers included. But I would hate to be the guy that does the books.

Even then it doesn't work because if you put a salary cap on the drivers then the team sponsors will just do "personal sponsorships" with the drivers....

Then you just exclude the drivers from the team budget cap.

Didn't they try to set-up something like a Team 'Cap' a few years ago, but the teams refused to be party to it?

(IIRC didn't it also included an 'open source' disclosure/availability of all parts development?)

Was that John Hewson's plan?

You need to take away the toys to make the teams spend less. Although sadly that will mean some people will lose their jobs.
