Most Favorite French GP of the past
Over the years we have had many good French GP's .
So what is your favorite one ?.... From Gilles Villeneuve giving it his all , From Stirling doing his thing , upto the presnt day . I have to say one of my Favorites was 1991 at Magny Cours . Not the best track in the world i agree , but watching Mansell overtake Prost's Ferrari twice in the same race was something quite special . He even had the nerve to overtake Prost on the outside of the Adalaide hairpin and then got him again after the pitstops on the inside at the same place ...and that was on Prosts home turf as well. Yep , that was a good one for me , Any others ? |

I haven't been watching F1 for THAT long, so yeah, 1999 is the best in my memory, but 1979 of course, at Dijon was BRILLIANT. Those last two laps...

1999 was superb of the latest GP's there. 1991 was a spectacular opening to the new Magny Cours arena, while 1986-87 were also great for the Mansell-Piquet battles.

Having seen footage from the 1979 race on the most outrageous Jeremy Clarkson in the world ever video, that was pretty spectacular, but the 1997 and 1999 races were good!

The French Grand Prix has a number of "almost" winners that are very memorable for me:
In 1972, at Clermont-Ferrand, Chris Amon was is in the lead in his Matra and driving beuatifully, before a puncture put him out of contention. In 1973, at Paul Ricard, Jody Scheckter almost won in only his third Formula One start -- he was leading magnificently in his McLaren M23 until Emerson Fittipaldi collided with him. In 1990 (I think), Ivan Capelli astounded everyone by leading in his Leyton House March, only to have have some sort of mechanical difficulties right at the end of the race. I did not say on purpose about Gilles in Dijon because that is the all time classic in nearly everyones book . Its just interesting to hear what everyone thinks is the best race from the past . |

Not the best race due to the fact that TGF romped it (again) but 1998, where Eddie held Mika back for lap after lap in the closing stages, Eddie was really suffering with his back, but they came out of the last bend and totally gunned it, each coming over the line sideways!
It was after this that Ferrari approached Stewart to see if they could contact Lear (Stewarts sponser) to see if Lear would make a special seat for Eddie. Last edited by Mr V; 15 Jul 2002 at 17:58. |

2000. why? DC flipped Shummy the bird, something I always wanted to do. and he won, after overtaking both ferraris. and it was a mclaren 1-2. it was the perfect race.

2000 was also good. Any race with a McLaren 1-2 or just a McLaren is good.

82 at Paul Ricard when Arnoux ignored team orders to win from Prost. 85. Piquet taking Brabham-BMW and Pirelli's only win all year, but more for Rosberg's comeback drive in the late stages after a quick pitstop for new tyres and getting Prost for second on the last lap. Could also include Dijon 82 (Swiss GP): Rosberg's first GP win and only win of the year on his way to the title. Prost was leading in the Renault but when the flagman saw Rosberg's Williams starting to close he got ready to wave the flag early! The Williams boys jumped on him and the race continued. In fact it actually went one lap longer than it should because, after Rosberg had got past Prost, the flagman delayed waving the flag to give the Renault a last chance to catch up! |

My vote goes to the 1990 French GP.
Prost in his Ferrari battling with Ivan Capelli in his Leyton House-March. Quite amazing. Rest of em were pretty boring, with one or two occasions worth remembering. As theres wa Alesi on his slick tires quicker then Gianni Morbidelli on rain-tires in the pooring rain in 1992. |

1999 was my favourite. Anyone of 5 drivers could have won that race - Hakkinen, Coulthard, Barrichello, M Schumacher, Frentzen, even Alesi. But Frentzen won it in the end by going without a second fuel stop.
I think this race sums up the whole 1999 season, even more than the Nurburgring the same year. 2000 is a close second. Coulthard dicing with both Ferraris was brilliant to watch. Shame Michael's engine blew up and Barrichello was delayed in the pits. It would have been a very exciting finish otherwise with 4 cars battling for the lead. |

in Magny Cours, 1999, Frentzen winning, and seeing how many passes there were...

1979 and 1999 seem like the greatest, 99 I remember really well as the fortunes varied so much, with Mika nearly winning from 14th on the grid and Frentzen outfoxing everyone on the strategy.

I visited (and drove) the old Rouen circuit a few weeks ago. WOW. I would have loved to have seen a GP there. It only had a few, but the sight and sound of those cars must have been amazing.
While I was only 3, I think the '79 French GP has to be up there with the best of any GP anywhere. Capelli's drive at Paul Ricard was excellent. I did like the '99 one too. Frentzen won despite being overtaken loads. And there were a lot of great drives by lots of different drivers. Mika had a good one (apart from his little spin - he will insist on using those kerbs and white lines). '00 was good too. DC having his 'justifying the McLaren seat' drive of the year. |

94 was special when Mansell returned and almost put the Williams on pole only to be denied by Hill in the final stages.
Every person connected with Media sport turned up for this one and underlined how massive the following of Mansell had become. If only he hadn't adjusted the set up on Sunday and if only that gearbox had held up and if only I had been been there! Regards Guy |
