The first corner...?
Hi, guys. I just watched qualifying and have been reading the aftermath and commentary on the web generally, and here particularly. I thought it a really interesting session: and all the time, especially toward the end, I was wondering, what will happen at the start? It's always imponderable, but...
1. We know that Michael gets antsy when he's not at the sharp end, and often pushes harder than physics will allow into the first corner, with unfortunate results (though I thought the drive-through was a hoot -- my girlfriend and I were speculating on what JPM wd. say if Michael *hadn't* got one!). 2. I'm not persuaded that Mark W is running so very light, but let us suppose he is: is there a chance *he* will make a dramatic move off the start, with unpredictable results? 3. Kimi will be feeling his oats after Malaysia; I wouldn't be surprised if he arrives at Curva 1 in tight formation with David, Rubens and Mark... 4. Will Fisi find his grid spot? Let us hope that the cars adjacent to him in the order are able to get their motors started so there aren't those tempting vacancies next to his proper spot! 5. I can't think of a fifth thing: But JV will be pushing to get ahead of Jenson *right away*, and JPM likewise with Ralf. I can't wait. What do you think? I hope everyone gets through the first lap without problems. I want to watch a race, not a first lap demolition derby.
I think Michael will be a bit more cautious than he was in Malaysia. He would make a right arse of himself if he gets involved in another first corner accident! |

Oh, Yoong Montoya, I agree entirely that it would be distressing to have the race addled becuase of first-corner mishaps; I was merely curious to know whether anyone had other possibilities in mind, or some assessment of the probabilities. Above all -- and I've talked about this during last season -- I hope for a safe race all round. (Though I confess, watching Jensen take out the foam blocks was pretty amusing once one knew it didn't result in any injury to him... The only way it could have gone better would have been if a Ferrari with AMD logos had trashed the INTEL blocks!)

And Mark will have to pay attention, as right behind him will be Trulli and the tremendous launch control of the Renault.
They were calling for rain tomorrow. This should be interesting. |

I want a 20 car first corner pile - up, 19 F1 cars with the safety car being the 20th car, and Montoya sails into the sunset...

Its always a hot start but Barrichelo should be in the lead easily enough..he's on the cleaner side of the grid and that always makes a difference in Brazil. Webber though is likely to get swamped by Ralf,Kimi,Trulli etc. |

I don't necessarily think Mark will get swamped. His starts have mostly been pretty good throughout his career, so barring problems I expect him to get away with the front group.
Trulli will be putting big pressure on him though. |

my guess.....
Barrichello away slowly, Webber from behind him up the inside of turn one, Webber leads as Montoya and Schumacher clash, bit of a pile up, Webber pits early but looks set for second before pulling off again, Barrichello spinning off and blaming HANS device, a shock win for Ralf Schumacher with Raikkonen and Coulthard next up. Panis fourth. |

It's funny -- today I drove a 35-lap Brasil GP on EA Sports F1-2002 simulator, and Ralf came first, trailed by JPM, followed by MS, then DC, then me (I was Kimi...). So your shock win theory, MichaelH, would be an interesting outcome!

P.S. If Nick H hadn't slowed suddenly in front of me and knocked off my front wing, I might have done considerably better -- was dicing with Rubens for the first third of the race.

The first thing that came to mind when I saw the grid was that SchM, being on the faster race line, will force Ralf to back off.

I am happy with that Barrichello is first on the grid, there is more chance all can drive safe through the first corner then,i think MS will not try anything stupidly in the start this time

I expect Trulli (p5, Renault!) to have a good start.
That should present opportunities for Michael (p7) and Montoya (p9) to win some places. So by the first corner, I would expect Michael to be close to Raikkonen, and Montoya to be close to Ralf. At that point, I expect both Michael and Montoya to give way, in order to prevent an avoidable accident. So after the first corner, I expect: 1/2 Barrichello / Coulthard 3/4 Trulli / Webber 5. Raikkonen 6. Michael 7. Ralf 8. Montoya |

Have Jaguar solved their fuel pressure problem, that has required them to ahve considerable fuel in the car? If not, Webber will have to pit earlier even if that means running heavier. I wouldn't be surprised if he makes an agressive move into turn one, but it's less clear as to whether it will be successful. I certainly hope so.
I think there will be contact in turn one, with Michael a posisble offender if he is still unfamiliar with starting in the pack, or maybe one of the Renaults being over-aggressive. Although, perhaps they don't have a launch control advantage now - Malaysia calls that into doubt. Assuming they all get round, maybe: 1 DC 2 Rubens 3 Webber 4 Kimi 5 Trulli 6 Michael 7 Ralf 8 Fisichella |

Thorstone -- not a bad guess! In the event, of course, the first 'racing' corner was irrelevant.
