Just a couple of questions really. On the official Tazio Nuvolari site there is mention of the International Car Drivers Championship on the results pages. In 1931 this was supposed to include the Grands Prix of Italy, France and Belgium and in 1932 Italy, France and Germany. Does anybody know any more about this?
Also, does anybody know what the scoring system was for the World Championship for manufacturers that started in 1925, and only ran until 1926 or '27? |

I certainly thought there was a European drivers championship awarded through the '30's, but I thought it was decided by a comittee looking at the results through the year and choosing the outstanding driver, rather than a formal points scoring arrangement.
As for the '20's championship I have no idea. TimD's a bit of a guru about this kind of thing, maybe he can help. |

Marshal the European drivers championship was started in 1935 and was based on a bizzare points system (1 pt for a win, 2 for second etc. - lowest score wins) and this is covered very well on
http://www.kolumbus.fi/leif.snellman/ I must admit I spent years trying to get info on that, but that can't be what the Nuvolari site is referring to as these are for 1931 and 1932. I think these must also be points based as Nuvolari apparently came 4th in 1931 and 1st in 1932. I can't see that a committe would bother working out who was the fourth best driver of the year, though you never know. But thanks for trying. |

Hi, angst:
About the 1925 World Championship, the winning car was awarded a single point, second two, third three and fourth four. A car retiring during the race was given five points, and six were awarded if it withdrew at the start. Another peculiarity was that participation in the Italian Grand Prix was mandatory. Points were awarded on the Indianapolis 500, the Belgian and European Grand Prix at Spa, and the ACF Grand Prix at Montlhéry, as well as the Monza race. The 1926 World Championship events were the Indianapolis 500, the ACF Grand Prix at Miramas, the European Grand Prix at San Sebastian, the British Grand Prix at Brooklands and the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. For the next season, 1927, were eligibles the four European races, at Montlhéry, San Sebastian, Brooklands and Monza, and the Indy 500 (extracted from Camel - The Complete History of Grand Prix Motor Racing). |

I put my list of Grand Prix Winners 1895-1949 on Leif Snellman's home page at http://www.kolumbus.fi/leif.snellman/gpw0.htm . Go to “List Guidelines” and scroll down to the World Championships and European Championships. If you need more information, post here. |

Results of the 1925/7 World Championships are relatively well known, what is less known is that the following three years there was also a WC, but it was never awarded since most of the qualifying rounds did not take place or were run as sports car or Formula Libre races.
