Prizemoney

The most frequent motorsport question my friends ask me is,
"Who gets the prizemoney?"
And I always answer, "I dunno."

Who reaps the riches? Is it written into each individual contract, all the way down the line? Are percentages split between driver, team and sponsor? Do higher-profile drivers have better contracts, affording them a bigger slice of the pie? Or does the driver get all of it? The oversized cardboard cheques they present for photo ops have the driver's name on them, afterall!

How does it all work? Anybody know?

Flatspot should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Here is an article about it. It applies specifically to Nascar but I would guess is similar to all top level motorsport. Prize Money Article

Thanks, Flatspot.

"Like athletes in team sports, drivers negotiate contracts with team owners on a yearly or multiyear basis at certain salaries. They also generally receive a percentage of the team's winnings, usually 35 to 40 percent of the published purses. Some teams have similar arrangements with crew chiefs, who also are under contract and receive a percentage of the winnings.

Drivers also receive bonuses for winning races and top-five and top-10 finishes, as well as where they finish in the points standings."

I don't think the sponsors get any of the prize money. The article didn't mention it though.

The sponsors get a cut of the merchandising, primarily because its their business name earning the dollars I expect!

It is said that Budweiser's involvement in NASCAR is fully self-funding from merchandise sales income
