Magnussen

I wish to god the team owners would bring drivers like Magnussen into the series for a full season. Thats what we need. Any thoughts?

I love Mags, but selfishly, I also love him in the ALMS. He should be fun to watch in the Corvette this year.

I really think he had his chance years ago in CART, but for whatever reason never was able to secure a full time ride. Watching him at Mid-Ohio I thought he was very smooth and consistant, somewhat different from his perception today as a very aggressive driver.

PT and he could probably put on some real shows.....but I hope he stays in sportscars actually....'we' sportscar fans need some great talant in our series too.

Brian,

If I remember correctly he subbed in at Penske for a while as well. I think I remember seeing him in Vancouver or somewhere else. I don't think he performed all that well. But I agree with you he is great in ALMS and is an asset to that series.

Yep, he drove for Penske. I liked his style. He didn't seem to overdrive in order to impress, but seemed to let the car come to him. IIRC, Penske didn't have one of their best years back when he drove for them, so.....

I'm a huge fan of Al Holbert, and his driving style, and I thought Mag's style was very similar in approach. I was actually very impressed about his potential, but it just didn't happen.

But put him in a car with fenders, and well, he drives much differently.

Penske would have suited him, being sponsored by Marlboro and and all

Magnussen replaced PJ Jones back in 1999. He was just as mediocre.

Believe me, Magnussen is far from a mediochre driver.

I think you can point to many drivers, with many teams, that their performance was not up to their talant level for a variety of reasons.

But that's fine, if CART fans 'don't want him', because a percieved talant level, it's OK by me. I rather enjoy him in favorite series; the ALMS. But I would take a good close look at the potential OWRS driver line-up for this year, IMO Mag's could be very very competitive, and is probably more talanted than many who will race in 'Open Wheel'.

Yeah, I agree, in fact I still have the 1994 Car Annual with the F3 Section on how Mags blew them all away. He was toted as the "Next Senna" on the back of his F3 career, and Imho when you grab some one from F3 and shove them into F1 it seems to have a detrimental effect on their career - he should've done a Montoya in my opinion.

well unfortunately he sucked in the Stewart, where Barichello was obviously the favored driver in the team.
He's probably better off in sportscars

I only remember his time at Stewart and unfortunately he didn't really impress me with his performances.

However, if Jackie Stewart, who's opinion I respect tremendously, thinks he's a good driver, then he has to have some talent there.

Coming into a new championship midseason, as Jan did at Patrick, isn't easy, especially when the other driver is established, much-underrated and well-liked in the tam, as Adrian Fernandez was in those days. For those reasons, we didn't truly see Jan's best form in CART, which is a shame. He's a far better driver than his open-wheel record suggests, and it's a shame he doesn't have a top drive in SportsCars or a major Touring Car series, if nothing else.

He got enduro runs in the V8s last year - I think the only coverage he got was when he tried to correct a spin "Euro Style" - Foot to the floor!

Jan is the third driver for Corvette in the enduros this year, I would call that a top drive in sportscars. Robert
