Nelson Phillippe

The live commentary at CART.com stated that Phillippe is 17 years old? I have no idea about his skills, and obviously he passed his licensing, but that is young!

Its been hard for me to get interested in CART, with all their troubles, working about 90 hours a week and devoting my remaining spare time to the race boat.

KC - for a moderator you're a bit out of touch. What with your mistake in this thread and the other one about Roberto Moreno

If it's getting too much for you, resign the moderator's job - i'd happily take over....

I have not been a moderator on this section of the forum since about 2000. I have not been receiving the emails about reported threads and such for quite a long time. All of this is fine by me, I really don't have the time to devote to monitoring all of the conversations going on.

Phillipes hair looks about 30 years older than him from the clips they played (during!!!) the race last nite.

All in all Phillipe drove a decent race. You're right he is very young but he seemed to stay out of the way, avoid blocking to much. I'm not sure that I would agree with his statement during his profile piece about having "earned" his ride in Champ Car but I'm willing to give him a chance.

I am getting old - a Champ Car driver that could be my son!

Seriously, Nelson Philippe did what was expected, focusing on learning the car and the track. He was a little too conservative on braking, and could have risked a little more, but gets praise for paying attention to his rear mirrors and not messing up the leaders pace.

I know Nelson personally and he is a great guy, but he did not earn his way into CART. Did anyone see the piece where he toured his home? Does that give anyone a clue? That house is worth atleast $2 million USD. Is he good, yes. Is he ready for CART, NO! Out of the top up and coming drivers I would rate him very low on my list of prospects.

Agreed, I actually got pretty angry after hearing that piece where he said he has earned his spot in the series. He most certainly has not. He did a good job in finishing his first race and staying out of everyones way, and for that I applaud him. It is obvious to all of us who pay attention that the only reason he is in the series is because of his money. However to the casual race fan, they haven't a clue and they think he really must be some child driving prodigy, because that is how the coverage tried to make him look. But thats to be expected, and I accept that I guess.

Roberto Gonzalez could learn a thing or two from Nelson in that department!!

Sneaky Dov.

Hey, if LHB bought his ride, so be it. It's a car, he can drive and he will learn. He won't be the first, and not the last driver that bought a ride.

Learning is something you do in Barber Dodge and Atlantics if one is to believe that CCWS is a destination series.

Well he learned in Barber Dodge, he skipped Atlantics entirely, which I believe was a big mistake as he wasn't even competive in Barber Dodge. Oh well, I'm not too worried about, he did a good job keeping out of the way, hopefully later in the season he'll at least be able to battle with backmarkers for position.

Well, he's done one season in Barber Dodge and finished 11th overall.

Not sufficient for the big time.

He wasn't ANY worse than the Japanese blue flaggers. And before anyone goes mental on me, I'm sorry, but they were ALL backmarkers. I defy anyone to prove me wrong. Sure, Takagi towards the end of his CART career started to FINALLY get a few good finishes, but bottom line is they were in the series for Honda and Toyota and were not up to standard. We will always have drivers like that in the series.

Mags, if "he's done that," where are the top 10 in Barber Dodge 2003 points and the entire Atlantic series drivers today? Not in Champ Cars.

I'm not necessarly disputing that, however Phillipe is on a team that we know has the potential to run its drivers near or at the front(Tagliani of course).
