Priory - 07
I would like to say a big thank you to all the Marshals at this years GP. First class marshaling, great banter and a bloody good laugh. How nice it was to see the whole post talking and exchanging views : Flag Marshals, Doctors and of course Fred our Observer. I would like to thank Mike who looked after my wardrobe, Ken for keeping me married, Dave for his witty comments and sprints through the gravel, James for not moaning (only joking). Chris, Neal, Gerald and Steve top blokes a pleasure to work with and last but not least Jason and Nick (JCB) who did a great job snatching. I would also like to say to the sod who put my wellington boots out with the bottles ....... I KNOW WHO YOU ARE. Great weekend, cheers lads see you all very soon. Keep Safe Stephen coyte. IO

Crossing a live circuit i take it is the done thing at silverstone. I must say i was surprised.
I was the Observer at Luffield in and was expecting my team to handle any incident on inside of Priory |

A very good call from the marshals at the incident The gap was long enough to clear the car to bridge inside.We know you were moaning but i have to say you need the Hubble telescope to see what we were doing you look after your part of the track and we will look after ours. THIS WAS A POST TO THANK MY TEAM FOR A GOOD WEEK END AND A JOB WELL DONE . We were at the incident not you, come and see me at the classic if you want to talk about it. Don't whinge on message boards

What a big head i've got..ooops You stick by your actions and in some ways i will say well done to your team. was it three you lost into the inside. with us. I play by the rules that are there for a reason ok silverstone marshals do things a little different and are good at it.......... |

yes it was three which still leaves five plus two came up from Brooklands.

I accept on this occasion you did no better.
But sorry no one including god can see round corners you had no way of knowing what was coming through Bridge (ok big screen) and on that note i as Observer would not allow my team track side unless i had a safty car i know its not the best thing on F1 but then my team is the most important thing to consider. I am not having a whinge or undermining your actions more an observation We all do the same job and work together. As for the weekend I thought your team worked well from what i saw. |

Nighthawk, if you were the Observer at Luffield why were you watching what was going on at Priory rather than your own sector?

This actually raises an interesting question. You have cars on the outside, but nowhere on the outside to push them. Is it better to use those on the outside to push them to the inside, and risk losing bodies on that side. Or do you go from the inside to cross the track twice, but finish in the right place?
I really don't have an answer to that, other than as marshals you have to work on instinct and experience and hope the end result is correct. More to the point, it highlights that circuit design does not necessarily consider the plight of those who man the margins. I suspect that in this case, there isn't really a correct answer. As long as everyone stayed safe, then result was worth the effort. |

Teletubby as you know there are 2 observers on most posts. The Black x obs was watching our sector and manning the phone while i was walking around to check the team guys were all ok this is how i saw the incident.
Woolley makes good points and agree the point i was making is crossing a live circuit is wrong what ever the circumstance. |

You're probably right d-squirrel, but in the mean time I feel the need to add my two penneth worth.....
I was on Rescue at Brooklands and I was very impressed with the way this incident was handled; in fact I have already singled it out in a previous post (Marshalling standards at the GP). As far as I could see the car was towards the middle of the circuit. Steves team were closest and therefore best placed to deal with it and pushing it to the inside seemed (to me) the obvious thing to do. The team quite rightly cleared to the posts on the inside in order to be in a place of safety. The IO from Brooklands sent a coupe of marshals up to Priory to assist Steve should he recevie any further customers during the race. Honestly, it was really slick and professional. Well done all I don't doubt that there are times when crossing the track is not advised but you can't madate that for all occasions. In this instance and IMHO the guys from Priory did a grand job.
