whatever happened to vortexes?
May be a thread for the technical section but I remember you used to often see little white jets of condensed air around the two trailing corners of the back wing.
That looked pretty cool - i wonder why you don't get those any more? The other thing I REALLY miss are sparks. bring back titanium skidplates that's what I say. both those things really helped give F1 an sensation of extreme speed and its the poorer for it. any other cool little bits of F1 technology that you miss? |

I miss those too.
I think the wing vortices would still be there, but we need moist conditions! Perhaps the current effecient designs aren't as good at producing long trails, but I suspect we haven't had the right atmospheric conditions for a bit. I can't really think of a reason, although the current end plate designs (compared with ten plus years ago) might be the issue? Sparks, mmmmmm, yes please. |

I miss the flames that erupted from the back of the cars in the Turbo era.
Maybe extra championship points could be made for artistic impression - with flames, sparkes and vortex's being judged in each race. |

Not exactly a "banned" or "missing" technology, but I really don't like the look of those high noses. I mean, the undertray is vissible!? They look to me like a fat old lady wearing miniskirts

And use white paint on the tyre sidewalls to make them look like the old gangsters cars

I wouldn't have thought it made much difference. The effect happened only at the tips of the wings. I can't see it being that dependent on width of car.

I think it has todo with most teams running a 'cruved at the end' main wing on the rear wing, this was done to reduce the vortex effect on the rear wings....

Teams do all that they can to get rid of vortices, as they are drag. If you see a car forming them, especially large ones, then that car has some issues. The reason that most modern jetplanes have winglets is to remove the vortices from the wing end, and remove the associated drag. IIRC, on a 747, the difference was something like 1500 liters of fuel saved per 1000k's flown.

Ahhh I wondered what the winglets were for and assumed (wrongly it seems) they were something to do with lateral stability in flight
