New TV Coverage

http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns13861.html

The Republic of Ireland is to get a new broadcaster for the Grands Prix with the Setanta Sports channel taking over F1 next year from state-owned RTE

The deal is for three years and Setanta says that it will cover the action on Saturday and Sunday

and...

Setanta Sports provides a pay-per-view channel which is available in Britain

The article then goes into the ramifications of this coverage being able to circumvent the proposed legislation preventing the showing of tobacco brands on TV in the UK.

However, it may be an alternative for those of us who are frustrated when ITV do not show LIVE qualifying. No word on costs though.

Doesn't help us Aussies who don't get qualifying at all and have to wait until after the evening movie before we see the European F1 races... Generally 11pm at night. Even if the event starts at 10pm or earlier.

And before people start on the "F1 isn't something worth a prime time spot in Australia", I am aware of that. I can still be frustrated though, can't I?

I'd pay just to watch qual and races live every time... Or go to the pub to watch it live...

ITV will have all qualifying sessions live next year - as for the first time contracturally they can make use of ITV 2 and ITV 3 where necessary.

That's good news, they certainly have the capacity now they have two digital channels to call upon.

What? ITV will be able to use its 'own' channels. Whatever next? Insightful commentary?

There is a glimmer of hope on the commentary issue.

Brian Barwick, head of ITV sport (and apparently a James Allen supporter) is favourite to be the new head of the FA.

Others within ITV are said to favour Ben Edwards for the F1 commentary role.

Interesting times may be ahead.........

This could be a double edged sword - does this mean that potentially qualifying could be shown only on ITV2 or ITV3? If that's the case there could be less F1 on terrestrial TV - not good.

ITV will only use its other channels for the qualifying sessions they've not shown on ITV1 in the past.

Didn't Setanta used to publish The Divine Comedy's music?

Wouldn't it be wonderful to have Ben Edwards doing the commentary?

Well, I'd love to see Ben Edwards doing the commentary, but I do hope that Setanta keep on David Kennedy and Declan Quigley from the old RTE (Irish TV) coverage.

No offence to Peter Collins, but you're not Ben, and you still have the football, Irish racing, Moto GP etc...

Don't get your hopes up U.K. Sky people who see Sentana sitting there next to Motors TV and NASN and think "hey, if I pay for that, I'll see all session of F1 next year"

Nu-uh, just applies to Sentana Ireland, not Sentana U.K.

Also odd that Bernie has allowed the Irish F1 coverage to go Pay per view only.....he has always been against that in the past, even during the F1 Digital days...

Hey Bernie, you shut down F1 Digital because you said there was no audience for it, but maybe you shut down the wrong thing?

Should've shut down the free-to-view coverage, then there would've been enough of an audience!

Yes David is quite good, gives good insight and knows what he's talking about. Declan's voice gets on my nerves though.
As for Peter...don't get me started, If you guys thought James Allen was bad, you haven't heard Peter Colins!

As the director of Lola Driver management I wonder if Setanta would let Kennedy Big Up his drivers like RTE used to??
