Barrie should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
FIA's rear wheel drive plan

European Rallycross Championship is to have a rear wheel drive class to fill the gap of the soon to be dispanded division 2.

How good is that, yesss come on, proper rallycross cars again.

I think it is a great idea Barrie if they allow the drivers to use their ingenuity again, so we might get some interesting cars.
I think the Supernational class is amazing in its various guises and something like that might be a class to lok at, but the problem is that the cars all seem to use Volvo engines which is fine if you live in Norway or Sweden but not if oyu live in the UK or Spain for instance.
If we could find an engine similar to the Volvo Evo motors then I think the prospects are superb.

I thought it was 2 litre Group A RWD? So no supernationals of anything of that sort.

This proposed class is Div1 type bodyshells, running 2 litre normally aspirated engines and RWD.
Just like rallycross used to be. Yippee. Have put my current Div 2 build on hold !!!!!!

You can find this at this site but it's only on the German news section...

A few selections from the site:

Rough translation
Novelties over the Reglement:

- From 2006 the organizer can incorporate one „JOKER LAP“ into its round course, can travel on become the Joker Lap in the free training, will not travel on in the time training the Joker Lap if a driver the Joker Lap does not travel on during the heats, gets he 120 seconds punishment time

- Of the FIA a new Cup is written out and to be sure for 2000 ccm cars group A, 2WD stern drive

The words group A refers to cars homolagated into to group A as opposed to group A spec cars.

If it was for group A cars that are currently homologated in RWD form there would not be great choice of cars BMW,BMW or BMW.

Once again a class where we could see some "old" EURO2000 cars. (same as the super2000 class in the RSS)

Especialy in GB you had some RWD Ford escorts.

Don't know the names at this moment but i think a guy called Moloney? used to race one of them some years ago, he was a regular contender in Holland. Is he stil racing?

My impression was that it was Group A regulations. With the only modification to those rules being, that you had to convert your car to RWD.

John Moloney drove a 4x4 Escort and before that a 6r4. Maybe you are thinking of Ivan Moakes with the white/blue escort with that big rear wing? He also was Dutch Champion at least once.

Funny German-to-English translation! Seemingly done by a keen leprechaun in 206180's PC... ;o) However - why not subscribe to Tim Whittington's "RX World" e-zine. Issue 26 had all the necessary information in English already last Friday.
For 2007 it should be a FIA cup, for 2008 it could be a true FIA championship. All current homologated Group A cars are permitted but must be converted to RWD. Max. engine capacity is 2.0 litres and forced induction is forbidden. CU!

Sounds good to me, that should allow a wide range of cars to be on the pace (I'm assuming that there are weight and dimension limits as well?). The basic concept sounds better than div2 hopefully it lives up to the promise

So RWD then.
Almost all modern cars are FWD these days exept the BMW's. What's wrong with a new nice model FWD racingcar?
Seen Scheveneels driving his FWD VW Golf. No not spectucalair enough.
Lets go the foreign way and copy the super nationals in the hope that...
But you can't copy ofcourse the EURO2000 regulations. Suppose you do??
Then yes what then ............?

Then you have to admitt .......

Yep that's the one, but i guess there where a few more of this type of cars, no?

And the way you see the new regulations i think is the right way!

Mark Higgins said he enjoyed the RWD experience on the 'RAC' last year. I think it'll be good for rallying to have (re-)newed dimension.

I think the Moloney chap you're thinking of is actually Richard Moroney who has campaigned both a Euro 2000 Fiesta and Escort. My understanding of the rules for the new Div Two is that is similar to British Supermodified cars like Dave Bellerby's or Kevin Proctor's.

Whatever the rules it has to be better than what Div Two is currently!

@ Dutch-RX: Admit? Yep - Noordermeer, Jackson and all the other EURO2000 apostles where seemingly not completely wrong, just some years too early for the FIA ORC and the pan-European Rallycross... ;o)

Used a website for translation thought the result was marginally funny.
Got enough rubbish in my computer without any leprechauns
My German extends to "Currywurst" .

@ 206180: If your German extends to Currywurst do not forget that 50% of that word is English anyway... ;o) And those website translations are rather understandable but still funny. It reminds me on a proverb we know over here. Straight translated into English it would read: I make me me nothing but you nothing out of the dust. In my English dictionary it simply reads: To clear off. Which I will do now - nightynight mate! ;o)

So rx-guru where are going 'Back to the Future' then.
And Holland is (was) leading the rallyracing way.
The new regulations are old wine in new bags or something like that.

But i'am still wondering why only RWD cars with 99% of the modern cars are FWD.

2000cc groupA FWD and 1600cc groupA FWD would be 2 out of 3 classes.
The only difference would be the 400cc more. One will certainly kill the other. Make a difference, and RWD is good for "good old times".

Now I'm confused...

So the 'new' Euro2000 regs mean cars MUST be converted to RWD?

Yet the SuperSeries Euro2000 regs restrict cars to FWD! So no using RSS cars in the European championship!

???

That's how I read it. Although there may be other classes that the Super Series 2000 cars would fit into?
