Some good news for racing fans
Fisi and Massa say that braking with the new tyres is a whole new ball game.

You'd think 2005 would give them a fair bit of data on how to work harder compound tyres. Braking included.

I forecast, by Melbourne, this will be a non-issue! Every year in testing there is some new "trouble" that the drivers and teams discover, only for it to dissapear by the time they first line up on the grid.

Sadly I think knowlesey is right, they have plenty of testing time left to work out how to get the most out of the tyres. A few more spins than usual in the early races are possible, but not by mid-season.

Maybe Knowles...but I'm sure some will use it as one of their first excuses as to why they haven't won / done as well as they hoped!

what exactly is the difference between the old tyres and the new? just levels in grip?
yes, all the drivers will get used to this, its like all changes, it takes a bit to get used to. |

Let's not get too disheartened,2005 was a good year (no pun intended) for overtaking. |

It will only be relevant if it increases braking distances by 50+ metres and the tyres are harder to 'read'. Then it may make a difference to passing opportunities but until then....
Brundles recent comments about driving a current car in the wet (he couldn't believe how much grip the car had) indicate that we are in an age where the technology has taken over and the whole nature of 'race driving' has changed. F1's 'golden era' has passed and without a reversion to a formula that puts the emphsis back on the driver we will not see such an age again. As long as F1 remains as a 'technology' based formula the driver will be secondary to the engineering. |

Looking at that chart it's hard to put a finger on why other years were so much better. Is it tyres, tracks, cars or drivers? |

Supposedly "best" drivers in the world, paid bizillions of dollars, they should be able to figure out a new tyre compound, thats what the big monies for.

I still think they should put some Bridgestone road tyres on the cars.. and then see how well they brake.

I seem to recall Anthony Davidson saying that the 2005 cars were like driving "a big formula ford" during the winter 2004 tests...
No doubt the teams will just increase the downforce to compensate for the lack of mechanical grip. |

Having to rely on tyre manufacturers to provide the racing is a sorry state of affairs indeed! |

We didn't rely on tyre manufacturers for racing anyways. They were just a part of it, albeit the part that could vary most (usually unexpectedly). I shall miss Michelin. |

You have to admit though, it was getting to a rather ridiculous state of affairs in terms of how soft the tyres were becoming, thus increasing the amount of "marbles" by mid-race. Do you recall the Canadian GP? Offline it was like an ice rink. I seem to remember JV having a massive accident as a direct result, and Kimi having some rallycross style slides at the hairpin.
In that respect, harder tyres can only be a good thing, now we just need to reduce the aero influence in the correct manner. |
