It's official Grand Prix is signed till 2015

4 July 2008 11:27 AM: It's official, the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park is to continue until 2015. Premier John Brumby made the announcement just before noon Melbourne time.

The race will start at 5.00 pm but the Government have said that no lights will be used.

The re-signing of the Melbourne race must be a big blow to the falling credibility of Grand Prix boss and the world's richest Albino Dwarf Bernie “Arfur Daley” Ecclestone.

Ecclestone has repeatedly claimed that the Melbourne race would not go ahead unless the race was run at night so as to provide European viewers with a more civilised viewing time.

Ecclestone has continuously claimed that he has cities around the world queuing up for the rare privilege of hosting a Grand Prix. He's threatened France, Britain and of course Melbourne.

Well, next year's French race will be at Magny Cour and now Melbourne will be around until at least 2015, If I was the BRDC I think I'd be pretty comfortable about Silverstone at least for the forceable future.

I tried to be as offensive as I could but I was working under time constraints. I will try and do better next time.

Oh and Bernie's announced Donnington has got the Grand Prix from 2010 so so much for that one.

Erm....considering Bernie is in charge of resigning GPs i hardly see how he is a loser here. He just got richer I'm sure he is pretty darned satisfied. Also lay of the petty insults please. Thank You!

Who gets richer as a direct consequence of having an evening race in Australia rather than a day race somewhere else? Maybe they can fit more support events in, but I'm not convinced that the TV ratings will be improved. Instead of being possible for European viewers to watch it when they get in from a night out, we'll now have to get up unnaturally early for a Sunday to see it life - and it psychologically seems wrong.

I just have a question regarding this new deal for melbourne.

If the race is due to start at 5pm, each GP goes for about 1.5 hrs or so, so 6:30 is the finish time. With no artificial lighting, on an overcast day at 6:30 at night, wont it be deemed to dangerous to drive if visibility is impeded by darkness?

I mean if a V8 Supercar race finishes at 5 or so you can tell its getting quite dark on an overcast day, so you can only imagine what an overcast day will look like at 6:30.

In saying that I am super happy that Australia gets to keep the Grand Prix. Just wondering if they have thought this through properly....

Preumsably the daylight hours at that time of year, in that area, are adequate enough? Having never lived in the southern hemisphere, let alone anywhere near Melbourne, I couldn't comment. I've decided to consider it a logical decision until shown otherwise, although, for sure, such decisions can be far from logical.

Bernie must be satisfied enough with the wad he is receiving: if he wasn't, then he wouldn't have put pen to paper. The tracks pay or they don't: Bernie certainly wouldn't if he wasn't satisfied.

This means the race will be bumped into Sunday for me, now. IIRC, Melbourne is (well, was) one of the events that I see late Saturday night.

There would still be daylight but the sun will be very low in the sky, which possibly could make life difficult heading into turns 1, 3 etc

The "Save Albert Park" mob are making noise again too - I presume when the GP eventually goes after 20+ years they will be able to claim they were right all along...
