#17 Porsche was nearly a second faster than anyone else, and it seems as if Audi didn't even try to match that 1:42.
Seems obvious that Porsche know they have 8 sets of tires for qualifying and race and they may as well use them or lose them. I can't see them being nearly that fast in race trim. Though the #18 reportedly had engine problems late in the session. Latest weather reports are now suggesting that the race will either be mostly or possibly even totally dry. |

Qualifying is live, looks ike AF Corse 1-2 in GTE pro with Aston 1-2 in GTE am. Of course it looks silly now considering Young Driver was concerned over bop.

#17 Porsche pretty dominant in qualifying, only car in the 42's.

The Rebellion #13 set a time which would have put it ahead of the Audis and just a second off pole last year. And yet, they're even further off the pace than last season. The development in LMP1 is insane. Porsche have found six seconds in one year. The #17 was just as fast as the Manors in F1 this year. I don't think I've ever seen a similar development in any form of motorsport.

I have not seen anything from Toyota over the years that they have the ability to catch a fast moving target in motorsport. They seem to have a steady pace of development but are not able to respond quickly to the speed of development from others. This was evident in their F1 days as well. Their decision making process seems to be slow in comparison to others leaving them behind as by the time they make a decision the goal posts have moved again. This is probably why they are good at making solid reliable cars.
In fairness they have come up with interesting innovations like the capacitor storage system or the side vented stepped floor in F1 (Brawn used it to win the championship) but appear not to have developed the ideas at a fast enough pace. |

They are correct, but them's the rules. You adapt or you get left behind.
Let's not forget that the fact the 919 uses batteries (that can store and release all of the allocated energy in one discharge) plays into this as well. If Audi and Toyota were in the same ERS classes but were using batteries I guarantee that they would be closer in qualifying. Next year's qualifying sessions are going to be fascinating. |

Sore losers. I never heard Audi complain about the rules when they were winning. Really disappointing, but expected.

It also can be said that it also favors teams willing to burn up an extra set of tires. Porsche used two of 8 sets of tires in qualifying, while Audi stayed on the same set the whole session on both cars.
Either Porsche are expecting good tire wear or Audi are betting on Porsche's heat cycled tires not offering up the performance that they did when they were bolted on the car. But I do sort of agree with Rinke's assessment. We have the whole driver average deal to try and make sure that there's cars out there for qualifying and that the fans get their money's worth instead of most of 2012 where Audi and Toyota would just run a banker lap and park for most of the session. But when only the two fastest laps count, it's already a foregone conclusion that the car that's fastest over one lap will likely win the pole. IMO, if the ACO/FIA want cars out there and fans get their money's worth, I'd favor a LM-style qualifying format where the fastest lap from any session can determine the line up. Or, since Audi don't hugely focus on qualifying, give the LMP1 teams 1-2 extra sets of tires to burn that don't count against race tire allotments. Last edited by chernaudi; 31 Oct 2015 at 19:16. |

They care because Porsche are almost guaranteed 8 free points (1 point more than the difference between first and second in race results) in the manufactures' championship and however they get split between driver teams.

Race might start wet. Audi Sport twitter and other are reporting a totally wet track and light rain ongoing. There also seems to be a lesser chance of rain from noon onward.

Let's get on with it. We might actually see some racing in P1 until it becomes a Porsche parade.

Conditions don't look so bad to justify the safety car.
