What a finish! That is why NASCAR is number one in my book. Classic battle to the checkered flag.

Yeah, .009 seconds was close. If Labonte had another 1000 yards or so, he woulda whooped Big E's butt!

Can anyone tell me if this was the closest finish ever?
Did you see the reaction of Dale Earnhardt's team. Just after the race had finished they didn't even know if Dale had won.
Wow, what a race.

Now the Chevys can quit complaining. They got the front dam mod they wanted now they can go racing. If Ford or Pontiac have any complaints I hope they keep them to themselves.

Between carefully orchestrated equality (NASCAR) and races where a 1 minute interval is considered close racing (F1), I'm not sure which is worse.

CART has the right formula, but cant seem to market themselves.

I shouldn't complain, at least we're racing.

Gerard, that race wasn't the closest in NASCAR's history but one of the closest. I will research it but I know that the 1959 Daytona 500 was a photo finish that was so close the results were changed the next day when they reviewed photographs taken at the finish line.

Also the 1994 July Daytona race had a margin of victory of 0.008 seconds. Dale Jarrett and Davey Allison had another close finish at Michigan in 1991 where Jarrett won by inches.

Although the race was a heartbreaker for Labonte/Gibbs they may look back at this as a crucial weekend. The sights of Jarrett, Burton, and Stewart in the garage before the checkered combined with their 2nd place must have been consolation for the three inch loss.

As a fan of 18 it was frustrating watching the last 70 laps; every time the car got moving a caution came out. Tough result for Skinner, could all the restarts have had something to do with the blowup?

I believe that Skinner's engine problem may have resulted from him punishing the car too much. Larry MacReynolds repeatedly told him to ease up, but Skinner didn't listen and paid the price. For all the talk about Earnhardt being a hard charger, he knows when to save the car.
