New WR...not so ugly

Just checked out mulsannemikes site for the weekly check and theres a picture and story for the 04 LM1/2 WR.

Here is a link to WR's site and a few more pictures...

I think it shows that the ugly rollhoop can be worked around...i think this is the best looking WR by far.

I agree nice looking (bar thoose flip ups on the rear end, look so "tacked" on).

Maybe the new generation of LMP won't be as ugly looking as we first thought, then again I think the R8 is good looking, in an odd kinda way, so don't count on my veiw...

Also I didn't quite understand the reason for the raised floor on the new gen. of cars, but since reading Mikes explanation (creating a sideways diffuser) it' all made sense. cheers Mulsanne Mike

It looks like quite an attractive car. Seems funny that one of the smallest names out there is first to release a proper 04 car.

Last year I believe new bodywork qualified as a new WR, this looks more extensive and the car is very attractive. Still using the Peugeot unit?

According to their website they have 2 different engines:
- 4 cylinder, 2L Peugeot engine

Interesting take on the double roll hoop. I was expecting a traditional roll hoop as on the 333SP and earlier LMP900 cars.

i was supprised at the single roll hoop two, i would have thought they would have choosen the same route as pecarolo sport when designing a new car and gone for the double hoop and no penalties. the wr doesnt look ugly but its no bmw v12-lmr at the same time. anyway you always need a car at the race to think, urgh....what is that all about. the panoz was a but of a joke or two for a few years and the r8 isnt spectacular. le mans wouldnt be le mans without a few ugly ducklings on the grid at five to four on saturday!

I've always had a sort of soft spot for the WR's, I really like this new one! I hope they will split the yellow paint up abit though.

NOTES:

I've said this in another thread where this car came up for discussion...

On Mike's site, the red WR tha tis pictured is what I call WR675-1...notice the front end intakes, the shape of the nose, etc, as you look at that red one and images of the "AutoExe" car in the other panels that raced at LM in 2002...

BTW...they are the same car...Downing Racing in Atlanta bought that car, dipped it in red, and campaigned it in a couple of ALMS races in 2003.

If you look up images of the WR that had the JPX engine in it at Le mans in 2003, you'll notice many diffeences in the front-end intake sizes, the size and shape of the nose, and some body lines changes...like the front fender areas....I call this WR675-2...

This new car seems to have taken some elements from 675-1 (the nose and intakes especially) as well as the fender lines of 675-2, and has added the new splitter elements on the front plus the tray on the back and possible endplates for the rear wing in the near future....

This next step in the WR's evolution looks much more Aero-efficient and to the eye, would seem to be a much better overall chassis package than its predecessors....

THose are my thoughts....

It's a LMP2 entry : aluminium chassis...

And notice that, if the car is not as fast as we would like to, it went to checkered flag last years, with a courageous battle at the end of the race when it broke suspension...

Good amateurs IMHO, passionnated and faithfull to Le Mans...

Maybe I'm wrong, but can't a purpose built LMP2 have a carbon chassis, like the Courage C65? I thought the aluminium-only rule was for the grandfathered LMP675...

Quick Q regarding the car:

Just been looking at their 3D renderings on their site, and I was noticed that there is a rather large difference between the front and rear tracks (ne widths). Now I'm not sure if this is just bodywork related, with the front bodywork wider so as to cover the front wheels whilst they are turned, or if it is actually properly designed like that...

Another LMP2 that is being built to the 2004 regulations is the Panhard. They expect to be 2 cars next year for a full season of ALMS and hopefully one car at Le Mans. Rumors of them being as early as mid-ALMS season this year, but if they make it to anything this year I expect it to be Petite Le Mans.

I have always liked WR. I can't quite figure out how they make the financials work, since they don't seem to carry big sponsorships, but great to have them each year making their efforts!

On the website, which is in French, doesn't the CARBONE in chassis description refer to Carbon? Isn't it a carbon chassis?

has anyone looked at the rendering for the panhard? I know the computer renderings dont tell all, but that thing looks like a brick. I wonder why its not designed with a wing?

Look at the Panhard Racing tab and you will see artist's rendering of the LMP2 car, which does have a wing. The other car is aimed at SCCA C Sports, and probably track days I guess, given the roll structure and full double seating. Some SCCA sports cars run with little or no wing to cut drag and gain straight line speed.
