Why did Montoya Retire?

I Know he said the suspension was damaged after that puncture but he jumped out of that Williams before the mechanics could even get to the rear of the car. How could he tell it wasn't just a puncture. Body language tells me that he just bailed from a difficult situation, especially considering relations between himself and Sam Michael are at an all time low.
