Side skirts

Do the 'typical' side skirts fitted to production cars actually do anything?

Generally the bottom of the skirt is level with the bottom of the car, just making the bottom bit of the car 'flatter'.

I am trying to decide whether fitting the optional extra site skirts to my RWD Corolla is worth the increase in weight.

Thanks

Attached are (hopefully) examples of a Corolla with and without skirts -
