29th November History Correction
Just like to point out an error on the 'On This Day In History' for November 29, about the 1987 NASCAR race in Australia.
The race was originally set down for this date but for whatever reason it didn't happen (delay;s in getting the facilities up to standard i think, because Richard Petty and Bobby Hillon Jnr came out in late 1987 to test on the track, along with locals Allan Grice, Jim Richards and Graeme Crosby), and was postponed until 1988. The race was held on February 28th, 1988, and was won by Neil Bonnett in a Pontiac Grand Prix. Second was Bobby Alison in a Buick Regal. 8 Australians were in the 32 car field. Allan Grice, Jim Richards (ok a Kiwi, but anyway ) Robin Best, Terry Byers, Garry Rush, Dick Johnson and John Lawes. Other Americans in the field included Kyle Petty, Dave Marcus and Ron Esau, even then 60 year old Hershall McGriff made the trip down. It not only was the first NASCAR race held in Australia, but also the first NASCAR race ever held outside the USA. Hope this helps Last edited by racer69; 29 Nov 2002 at 09:40. |
