"MASTERCARD PRICELESS MOMENT OF THE 2000 F1 SEASON"
MIKA HAKKINEN'S THRILLING PASS AT SPA NAMED THE "MASTERCARD PRICELESS MOMENT OF THE 2000 F1 SEASON"
Purchase, NY February 5, 2001 - Mika Hakkinen's daring pass at the Belgian Grand Prix, a move which
led to his fourth victory of the season, has been selected as the "MasterCard Priceless Moment of
the 2000 F1 season." More than 60 F1 historians and journalists worldwide participated in the
initiative created and implemented by MasterCard -- an official global sponsor of the Benson &
Hedges Jordan-Honda Grand Prix team.
Hakkinen's move, considered by many F1 experts as one of the most exciting in F1 history, was
selected as MasterCard's Priceless moment from among a total of 10 Grand Prix moments from the 2000
season as nominated by a panel of international F1 historians and media. With 63 ballots returned,
the Belgian Grand Prix moment garnered a total of 200 points -- nearly twice the point total of the
second-place moment. In addition, the overall Priceless moment appeared on the most ballots, an
impressive 83% of those cast, and received the most 1st place votes with 29. The selection process
awarded five points for first place votes, three points for second and one point for third place
votes.
Rounding out the top three MasterCard Priceless Moments of the 2000 F1 season were:
a.. Rubens Barrichello's emotional victory in Germany, the first of his F1 career, received a
total of 105 points, appearing on 39 ballots and receiving a total of 10 1st place votes.
a.. Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen's one-on-one duel at the Japan Grand Prix claimed the
third spot. The battle for the championship received a total of 83 points and appeared on 29
ballots.
The Priceless Moments of the 2000 F1 Season poll was the culmination of a season-long program
implemented by MasterCard. The Priceless Moments campaign was previously held in conjunction with
the Australian, Brazilian, Canadian and U.S. Grand Prix races.
