I guess its that way now because it was that way for a long time. How they came up with it probably lost in history now. I would imagine the emphasis on the car comes from the fact that when it all began it was all about the the car and not the driver. Then after we started to see real characters and daredevils of the day as racing drivers, it started to be more about the dirver and less about the car.
