Helicopter pilot injured in crash

A helicopter crash-landed at a busy motor racing circuit.

The aircraft came down near to the racetrack at Oulton Park, in Cheshire, shortly after 1.30pm.

A 52-year-old businessman from Chester, who was piloting the Enstrom 280 FX Shark three-seater civilian helicopter, suffered minor injuries.

Thousands of spectators at the circuit for the Formula 3 GT Championships watched as the helicopter plummeted to the ground.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said nobody on the ground was injured.

He added: "The pilot was travelling from Hawarden airport in north Wales towards Knutsford in Cheshire when he was forced to make an emergency landing at Oulton Park racing circuit.

"The pilot, who has six years flying experience, noticed smoke in the cockpit and made an emergency call to Manchester airport before landing.

"Upon landing he received minor injuries and the helicopter was seriously damaged.

"Emergency services were on the scene quickly and the fire service deployed foam over the helicopter as a precautionary measure."

Initial reports suggested that two people had been onboard the helicopter but police say the man was travelling alone.

Is that relevant? I'm sure he'd prefer a little privacy.

I hope the police & fire brigade units who attended the incident had tickets!
That's what I thought the red flag was for at first. Then I thought there had been a big crash at Druids or somewhere like that. When we were told it wasn't to do with the race, my dad suggested that some idiot was running on the track

It was a strange situation for me, when I first saw the red flags at Druids, they told us to park up on the start finish line, but you could tell from the Marshalls faces that it was something big. Then we were told to move to park ferme and I was then told that it was in to spectators at cascades and thats where my parents were watching from, so I was scrambling around to find a phone to ring them, was a relief to find out everyone was ok including the pilot. Certainly took the happiness of victory away!!

Spinner,
Well done on your victory - it was a good race up until the stoppage!
Everything was a bit up in the air (!) and we marshals didn't really know what was going on!

My wife & kids were supposed to have come with me on Sunday and would have been watching from the Avenue - so, even though there were no spectator casualties - I would have been a little panick-stricken for a while.

Anyway, well done again - what number are you?

Congratulations on winning! I enjoyed your race, but it looked most odd seeing the parts van competing, and I'm sorry that it was curtailed but everybody was OK.

However, I don't think many people have won a race where a helicopter crash has intervened.

Congratulations, Spinner! I remember saying on Sunday that you seemed to have found something you didn't have on Saturday - the correct tyres, apparently!

Yeah Pirelli supplied tyres with different rolling circumferences, 35mm different from one side to the other, but branded the same! Would have been good around ovals!

That was a surreal experience marshalling during that weekend. I'd done some fire training in the morning, and after being told "you'll probably never see a real fire" i was involved in dowsing down the golf the fire truck had "abandoned" when the helicopter went down. I'm trying to keep my eye on the job whilst taking directions from Mike Kelly, and all the time in the back of my mind is "s**t, a choppers' just crashed".

I live right next to an airfield, so i'm used to a lot of air traffic and it's something you know could happen, but hope it never does. I'm just glad no one was seriously injured, and it doesn't hurt to have "our" emergency services praised in such a good way in local and national press.
