Bernd Schneider - End of an era

Well the DTM's worst kept secret is official... Bernd will hang up his lid this Sunday, 26.Oct.2008.

I think we should pay tribute to probably the DTM's greatest driver ever and an incredibly talented racer who, though taking a world GT crown, never realized his true potential in Formula One.

Sad news. I mean, Bernd will be able to spend more time with family and enjoy hobbies. But on the track...
F-1 fans usually laugh at pilots who couldn't make their career in Bernie's Circus. And they usually are not interested in reasons.
Well,to say the truth, I hoped Mercedes would enter FIA GT with their new coupe in 2010,and Bernd would drive there. But...

Schneider is indeed a good example of a driver who didn't make it in F1 but still had a career many F1 drivers only can dream of.

He may not have had success in formula one but there's no denying he's a truly great driver - you've just got to look at the list of championships he's won to see he has proved his class time and again. Sad to see him going but it's better to quit whilst he's still competitive than drag out his career and suffer a gradual decline.

Great driver. One of the 'ones that got away' in F1 terms.

He illustrates the point that F1 isn't the sole home of the "best" drivers in the world, but rather the showcase of the best connected or represented drivers. The list of drivers that didn't perform in F1 as well as they did in closed tops is a veritable whos who of sportscars. Too bad those guys will rarely get the payday Lewis, Kimi and others have so far.

To have a driver of Bernds standard driving regularly in the DTM, with 5 titles and multiple victories to his name, has been a fantastic experience. I can remember Bernd all the way bck to F1 nd sportscars, and alsways enjoyed to see him teach the young rockets a thing or two.

Also the close figths Mr DTM had with mr Le Mans, hs been breathtaking.
