Vive le France!
So then guys
What on earth came of the French at Lydden! After many attempts from the likes of Knapick and Pailler etc Jeanny and Laboulle were awesome at the weekend. They literally followed Sverre over the line!! What do we put this down to? Are the cars the same? Do they have something that perhaps Hansen doesnt? Is it tyres? I am very aware both are very quick and good drivers but was somewaht surprised to see them so high up at Lydden behind the likes of Stecka, Hunsbedt, Holte and the usual frontrunners. |

Vive le France
This is the start of the change of cars in Div 1. Lead by the French and to be followed by the Hansons Teams Ds3 soon to come Sweden ?? its down to the change of engine position from north to south which we have now, to Transverse as the Wrc have been for years, Laboulles team M Tec have been working away last year with this project and also B F Goodrich tyres as well who spotted that one, Jeanny was on Avon's. Laboulle was so quick with out all the drama of side ways driving as his times proved The M Tec team have been working with Sadav gear box people and others to make it all work. It Works as the results show, Hope fully this may lead to more manufacturer's been involved in the ERC with the cars been more in line with what they market to us all. It was a good week end of racing Good luck to every body in Portugal ? bet 1 Isachsen 2 Laboulle 3 Hunsbedt and A Scott a good tenth

I didnt realise they were using transverse engines and boxes.
I thought everyone was still doing the whole longitudinal thing or if not using the Schanche gearbox converter he used on the Astra and WRTC Focus's. Fair play to them both, I was not expecting that result and I doubt many ERC regulars were either! |

Most of the div 1 grid use Sellholm gearbox's and front and rear diffs and steering racks and use Gunarsson chassis's and Jernberg chassis's and Hanson have there own and the same with Eriksson. The Schanche gearbox was used by K Procter last season and now changing to the Sellhom set up, much better, and faster

THe Schanche stuff is quite old hat now I guess.
I am aware of Sellholm and Gunnarsson, they seem to dominate the mechanicals with Karlson, Godfrey and Trollspeed the engines. Fascinating that it is mainly Scandinavia doing the basics, despite a few teams using Ford, VW and Skoda cars. I guess Oreca are in there but I imagine very expensive!! Over here Sadevbpxes are frowned upon compared to Xtrac, Hewland and Quiafe, a lot of F2 teams tried them and gave up |

We're looking at getting a Sadev box for the Escort - the Quaife isn't up to it (and others have found the same). Sadev and Tractive are becoming more popular, Quaife seem to have quality control issues.

Really?? Thats amazing considering their charges! I know someone who had a box rebuild there and it was into 4 figures!!
Sadev I recall wre fwd specialists, and I think they came into prominence with the French fwd F2 cars from Peugoet and Citroen perhaps? Our guys mainly used Xtrac and perhap[s Quaife? Not sure about Hewland, they came to fwd party late on I think. |

Sadev have as you say had links with a number of French manufacturers for a while - Citroen, Peugeot and Renault all use Sadev to some degree (Clio Cup cars run Sadev boxes for one). Rebuild costs may be high but the rebuild intervals should be longer - the Quaife needs a freshen up after every event otherwise it sticks (sequential box) and we're well below it's maximum rated power. All of the big power Escorts (here and Ireland) are moving away from Quaife boxes - Sadev aren't fully in production yet (but have been running dev boxes in some Mk2's for a while now) and Tractive seem to be getting a following in Ireland.
Getting back to topic I was impressed with both Jeanney and Laboulle, they were on the pace all weekend and as mentioned above seemed very smooth in comparison with some of the other drivers. Laboulle was also very approachable in the paddock and took the time to talk to my 9 year old son and sign a poster for him (after some help spelling his name!) - only a little thing but it made his day. |

I saw that too, I saw him talking to quite a few people
A lot of people dont seem to realise that it was a debut for that car too! Hope we see him here again as he was impressive in that inimitable French way that Jean-Lub first was. And Jeanny is so young, far too good! Last edited by BertMk2; 28 Apr 2011 at 18:25. |

There is an interview on Rallycross.com (or Rallycross.hu can't remember) were Hansen showed great interest in transverse engine position. We all know that means lower engine positions and less engine movement interfering the handling. But so far the power handling was not as good as with longitudinal engine positions. Now seems sorted?

I knew Will's 306 and 309 used a longitudinal engine.
What a lot of people forget is that the 205T16 was transverse! So the French know what they are doing!! |
