Did anyone see the article in 'Motorsport News' about Mildenhall Hot Rods winning their case for noise? It was the usual thing, a new comer bought a house close by then complained, looks like the judge took the view that since the venue has been making noise for a number of yrs, the newcomer should have taken that into account.
As this appeared to be some kind of test case it could help other circuits like Thruxton, Croft etc. |

I think the noise problem is a general one that, as I recall, the FiA are involved with in terms of trying to reduce noise in all clases of motor sport. Presumably this is meant to make F1 unique in appealing to those of us who rather like the sounds of highly tuned internal combustion engines. It may also be a prelude for them shrugging their collective shoulders and pointing out that electric racing is the only way to go. (Providing they don't allow noisy tyres.) As far as I can tell Donington is working with the same sort of constraints that most other circuits have to adhere to as encouraged by the various motorsport controlling bodies. Donington are trying to gain a few potentially revenue generating days for the bigger meetings and that seems reasonable given that the place needs income for investment. All of that said there have been a few quite noisy test days recently yet other days when one has expected noise have been pretty quiet at my location about a mile north of the track. A lot depends on weather conditions and wind direction. As I recall one peculiar factor of the noise control conditions related to the planning consent is to do with the he number of consecutive 'noisy' days that are permitted and from memory there are rather few times when up to 3 consecutive noise days are allowed. This means that the number of big meetings the circuit can attract is limited in any single season. It also explains why Test days are mostly Thursdays. Whilst a Friday test day might be more appealing to those travelling some distance the planning rules work against such an efficient way of scheduling things. FWIW I have seen that you can get an 'App' for mobile phones that reports the noise level the phone detects. It doesn't work on all phones though. Not sure why. Perhaps some have background noise cancelling systems that defeat the attempt. No idea how accurate it might be. Nevertheless, as you point out Rudolph, no test and no warning before expulsion is not a great way to treat customers. Especially for something like a noise test where the methods and results can be, shall we say, inconsistent at the best of times. |

How was Guards, Peter? I was trying to follow it on MST Live but very difficult to work out quite what's going on. Oh for a commentary!

I had a great day at Donington yesterday - good to meet up with Grant, Delta, Compte and Alan. Thoroughly enjoyed my inaugural Delta tea despite Compte's warning I should have a tetanus booster
Hardly saw any racing except for the Historic Roadsports as a mate was entered in his Mustang. Was hoping to get back today but my 'plans' for an early morning Mothers Day dash were scuppered by 'er indoors' having a lie in. |

Had a nice little run in Roadsports. Despite little attention over the last 5 months, (new spark plugs, fresh fuel & a set of tyres) the Elan was super to drive.
I saw the rainclouds on the horizon but they held off until at least race 5 so that was a bonus too! Next outing is Goodwood Spring Sprint, then HSCC at Cadwell. Maybe I might meet some tenthers there ......One of these days I'll get my Élan GTS ready to go out. Paul (HRS #1) |

I was flagging at Coppice on Sunday. Peter's race in the MGB was pretty entertaining - little groups throughout the field, and all tremendously well behaved in that there was no contact we had to report. Some of the bigger cars were getting a regular drift on the exit which was fun to watch.
With the exception of a bit of oil there on an already greasy track in the morning causing some cars to run wide through the gravel, we saw some great racing - lots of position changes and lots of lining up cars for a move on the exit. Was a pity Richard Dutton dropped his Mustang in the gravel at the end of the TC race though as it was running well. I'm looking forward to the Historic Festival in May now. That should be a belter. |

A great start to the season - I was spectating for Sunday's races and there were some great battles going on. Hopefully I'll post some photos before the end of the week.

The Richard Dutton Mustang looked pretty lairy into McLeans after the first few laps. Locking rears I think but whether due to brakes or clutch/gear selection problems (or something else) was not too clear. Did anyone else notice how friendly all the circuit staff were? Notably the security chaps. A couple of people mentioned it over the weekend. On my way out at about 18:30 on Sunday evening the lad on the gate asked me if I had enjoyed the event and when would I be visiting next? Very amiable and very well briefed on the future events calendar it seemed. As was his supervisor who I had chatted to on several occasions over the weekend. If that's the way the season is going to be supported there should be great meetings for all at Donington this year. |

Agreed, we made sure they got a wave and a smile as we left. But I have to say the whole weekend was like that. Scrutineering, all smiles and assistance, although being told to polish my helmet by someone whom I only met five minutes previously, was a bit over the top I thought. Bumped into a few tenthers, Robyn slater, Dave GT6 (I'll get yer next time), a couple of nice chaps in the By Box Saloons (not tenthers), a real racing driver who was wearing shades so it took a second to realise it was Simon Hadfield . Missed Delta and the Compte but we did look for the truck. Had a good chat with Jim Campbell who is the driving force behind FISCAR. I'll get you too next time! As to the event; Practice was wet/greasy and I was equally wet. Far too much braking really. The MG needs to be driven like a go kart and I just couldn't find the confidence. None the less I wasn't last and had a few competitive cars around me. However, having seen the angles achieved by Whizzo in the droop snoot B I should at least have gained a bit of a clue as to how to drive! The drivers briefing was lighthearted but serious enough to bring the important points home, thank you to the existing members for your welcome. We had a standing start, my first for quite some time and I allowed a couple of cars to get past. I soon regained those places and started on those in front. We were in a gaggle of around four cars (including a green Elan, a blue TVR and a red MGB). Got past the Elan, then a bit later he got past me and we were mostly together all through the race. Around ten laps from the end the Elan got past and I followed, we diced all round the lap and try as I might, he was just a bit too wide. Hopefully we provided some entertainment down the back. I think I passed four cars on merit and the rest was due to attrition. Nonetheless a most enjoyable experience. Made better because we beat Whizzo! |

Glad to hear that, as I said it's frustratingly difficult to interpret what's happening from just the live timing, interesting though it is. I noticed 2 E-types that were 0.2s apart at the start of the lap they both dropped out on, so feared the worst.

Fully agree with Grant about the politeness of the security staff. When the guy on the gate said "I hope you have a good weekend" I really felt as though he meant it.
Top marks to Donington. |

I agree the picture is superb. I think it was some of the worst conditions I have ever raced in. Not only was the rain heavy, down the two straights we had the evening sun straight in our eyes Stuart Wright |
