He's definitely no Murray Walker, despite what he may think...

Another gem today which im sure Brundle wanted to punch him for...
J Allen: "I thought you were going to make a snobbish comment about Klein's earring Martin" - Silence - Cringeworthy. |

You could almost hear Martin's annoyance at that.

He did a fake laugh off mic that you could just hear. It was clearly fake.
I just imagined Martin looking at James, smiling and then turning his head away and rolling his eyes. Ahh, Jamesy Jamesy. |

What about yesterday:
JA: " so the new quly system will have 2 20 minute sessions and a 20 minute break...20 mins! enough time for you and me(Martin) to play scrabble and talk about other things" MB: "Mmmph" |

What about when he was talking to Mike Gasgoine. Not only the way he kept asking him to comment on the other teams and drivers but at the end."Thank ou for joining us this afternoon It's certainly made the conversation up here more interesting" Well they certainly kept the more interesting conversation up there 'cos we never heard it.

I wish I had listened to ITV now I certainly wouldnt mind a change in commentary team, especially now as we have to endure another few years (at least) of ITV's drab coverage.
Im sorry - but even the 'features' are not very interesting and Louise still asks some of the most annoying questions. R5 had Jonny Herbert as a pundit in Monaco - why dont ITV get somebody in with James and Martin? Hmmm second thoughts - has anyone ever died of boredom before? JA quote "Button's slow qualifier left the goal wide open for Schumacher, literally". (Barcelona) Last edited by Nina; 30 May 2004 at 18:20. |

He was supremely annoying for the whole race - does his voice not grate on people?
"Oh, biiiiiiig moment for Montoya there" *sorry Martin, did I just interrupt you yet again with another facetiously unnecessary piece of telling-the-viewers-what-they're-seeing?* |

IMO commentators have a thankless job, im not supporting JA though, but Laorence, what else are they meant to do apart from telling-the-viewers-what-they-are-seeing?

The idea of commentating is do complement what the viewers are seeing by explaining to them the context of what they are not seeing.
What Allen is doing is patronising the viewer into submission, not explaining what is happening in the race. |

A general mody comment. Lets keep the personal comments out of this. Obviously this guy is the bane of many F1 fans life, but restrict the discussion to his professional side.

I actually thought he was reasonably bearable this race. Maybe I'm becoming immune...

I agree with Kidzer that commentating live must be pretty tricky, but we know that there are people out there who can do it better. Why don't ITV?
To be honest, JA annoys me so much every race that I usually rant at the TV and then instantly forget his latest demonstration of stupidity. However, I did notice that he got his facts a bit iffy this weekend. I seem to recall him mentioning Fangio's '57 win and Stewart's '70 drive as 'Nurbrugring greats' I'm fine with Fangio, but the German GP wasn't even held there in 1970. I guess he meant 1968 - don't know whether he's to blame or if he's got a researcher in his ear. I rather suspect the former. |

At least Murray was funny. Do my eye's deceive me or is Mansell's engine sounding rough.

his way of saying 'One' Montoya instead of Juan annoys me.
And I can't imagine Murray Walker advertising the fact that Simon Cowell is on Speed Sunday, which, incidentally, is like Hello! magazine on TV. |

Yeah, you're right....I really can't imagine Murray advertising Speed Sunday.
Ironic, given his advertising background! |

If you can manage the former, I suggest you start a 'revival business' and can I be your partner [business] please? We could make a killing [sorry, wrong word]. Back to JA, I'm not sure if it is him, or the 'racing' - sorry, wrong word again - that puts me to sleep on a Sunday afternoon. |

I actually did fall asleep during the Nurburgring race, and I fell asleep during Barcelona and Imola. Maybe that can be the new benchmark, if I stay awake its a good race...?

I've been racking my brains to try and remember the "best" JA quote from Nurby and I've just remembered -
"those of you going to Silverstone with your union jack flag's that say 'we love you Jenson' on them" Dear god!!!! |

Another JA classic - didn't hear it this weekend but often used at a race MS has won often.
JA - "Michael's got this place bought and paid for..." |

The antagonism between JA and MB is highlighted by the snide comments but it would be nice if somebody had the back ground to it all.
The original definition for a monkey on his back refered to a drug habit and nothing to do with minor motor racing problems..... from .. an old Frank Sinatra fim. circa 1955. 'The man with the golden arm '... |
