I agree with Stone Man - the tress being there is the REASON he stood there.

I've always been told, when going to a rally, you place a tree or two between you and the car, so that if something does go wrong the car impacts with the tree and not you. The tree, in this case, stopped the marshal from being hit.

Those with any imagination stand where it is least likely that cars will fly towards them, not where it is most likely to happen.

Yes trees provide a good protection - often but not always. If that car had been a meter to the left it would have whipped round the tree and taken him out. If you are going to rely on trees you need to be behind a tree line.

Count that as a lucky escape, not a sensibly planned option.

Regards

Jim

Yep, I certainly wouldn't stand behind a single tree where he was (ie likely to be where the car would / could go off) - however the point is he may have been applying the "tree rallying logic" to his position - just not that well.

From those in the know (and it was a certain rasonably well known British rally driver who drove for Suzuki, on a scandinavian event), the marshal concerned was standing there as behind the tapes on the right of the picture was a crowd of spectators and somewhere nearby was also a film camera, but again I would not be standing there, but yes the tree did provide what little protection there was to have in that location, unlike the circuits in the forests you dont get a solid armco barrier to stand behind and also dont get the fences to keep the spectators behind
